MemberIt looks great, my only thing would be rather or not I could port the spool to make it lighter. In solid brass that critter has to weigh a ton. How strong is the drag?
It looks like a bi-metal kit though.
Peter,
He provides patterns to port the spool. I did not do this because I did not have the correct bits to drill brass. We put the reel on my friends bamboo rod and it was a little tip heavy. That surprised both of us.
I installed the click drag kit and it is a little more drag than I would normally have on a 4wt reel. I can shorten the drag piece to make it lighter but I want to try it first to see how it works.
I used white vinegar to patina the spool and back plate to darken them and give it some contrast. He explains how to do this in his instructions.

MemberThat thing looks awesome! What did you make it out of? Where did you buy the kit at? Come on tell us some more about that critter!
Peter, I bought the kit form The Eclectic Angler, here is a link to his site. www.eclecticangler.com
The reel I made is brass. He has a few different metal options to chose from but I liked the brass one the best. He supplies everything you need in the kit. As for tool, you need a half round file, a rat tail file some screw drivers and a vise.
I used vinegar to patina the spool and reel back plate to give it some contrast. I put a 4wt line on it yesterday and hope to fish it next week if it warms up a bit.

MemberI,m reading “LAST DOG ON THE HILL” by Steve Duno.
It’s another dog story book. I fall for them all the time but I can’t stand the endings.
I’ll get back to fishing stories when I get back from Erie. Maybe I’ll have some to share with everybody. ::)bill heffner

MemberI was there is September and had a blast. We left from Philly and started out at 2 in the morning. I know how you felt. I’m hoping to get out there again and fish the other side of the state.
The guy that aranged our trip goes there at least 3 to 4 times a year. He did a slide show for our TU chapter on fishing MT. Really good information. Thanks for sharing you trip and Happy Thanksgiving to you and all the other members of IA.

MemberNice fish. There was a show on one of the outdoor channels where a guy was fishing the Delaware near Philly for smallmouth. He caught some nice fish where people told him there were no fish.
Some fish just like the city night life.
Thanks for sharing your ghetto experience.bill heffner

Enjoy you trip and don’t forget to post some pictures when you get back. 😉bill heffner
MemberI think weight and balance with the rod you are using is a factor in picking a reel.
