MemberGet the RIO Modern Speycasting dvds with Simon Gawesworth.
Amen.
EVERYBODY should have a look at his (unfortunately) short segment on ‘single handed spey’. It was like I was watching black and white television, then someone came along and flicked on the colour button!
I had reason to rejoice 3 days ago as it meant that I was able to quickly cast to a fish (and hook) that 12 months ago I wouldn’t have been able to as I had no backcast room in that direction.
More spey action please!

MemberI think our real problem is that we are so far removed from what what we wear and eat. We go to the supermarket and buy our steak or mince meat, never appreciating the processes that get it there. I’ve never killed a cow with my own hands, but I’ve eaten plenty of them.
I don’t think I could work in a slaughter house, but I appreciate somebody doing it for me.
The other problem we have is the anthropomorphism of animals in films. Instinctual behaviour in animals is interpreted with human emotions. When the movie ‘Babe’ came out, pig farmers couldn’t sell their pigs as the arse fell out of the demand for pork.
I don’t know what the answer is.
We have a ‘respected’ scientist here (Dr. Karl) who is saying things on radio like ” Just because you can’t hear them scream doesn’t mean that fish don’t cry like a kicked puppy when they are caught on a hook.”
How many ‘do-gooder-no-thinker’ people now believe that recreational fishing is cruel. All those who buy fish but don’t go fishing I’m thinking.andrew grabham
MemberRugby league is a better spectator sport, unless you are a Kiwi. I was hoping the Warriors would defeat Manly in the final, though I think everyone not living in Manly hoped that.

MemberThe best thing about UnZud winning the cup was that Air New Zealand sent me an email saying they were celebrating, and offered me ridiculous discounts on air fares. TRUE STORY! 😀
I’m taking the whole family South Island for 10 days in January, nine days of which I’ll be fishing! The fish can’t be as hard to stop as the front row.
Go ALL BLACKS!

MemberZach – if you get no feedback, generally people are happy. Cock it up, and you will soon hear about it!

MemberI just hope that the industry gets behind these people, so that it keeps going.
We had something very similar happen in Oz when ‘Wildfish’ with Peter Morse and ‘Á River Somewhere ‘ with Rob Sitch were on Free to Air TV. These series rocketed sales in fly gear, but the after-market help was in scarce supply. 6 months later there was a lot of second-hand fly gear in mint condition for sale.
Time to advertise casting tuition for all you instructors. Lest we loose them once again.

MemberA family trip to the South Island of New Zealand,
10 days with heaps of fishing (I hope) thrown in. 😀andrew grabham
MemberHi David
Though I haven’t cast them side by side,
I think that the Xi3 has a better saltwater
application. It feels heavier than the TCX,
but it casts a wicked distance with little
effort. For me it is NOT the rod I would want
to cast all day, but when I think of chasing
goldies on the flats and longtails that dive
when you get within casting range – THIS
IS THE ROD that I want to have in my hand.
No question.Andrew

MemberI think that fly rods are a LOT stronger than we give
them credit for. It is just that they feel so delicate.Peter Morse talks a lot about correct rod angles giving
the advantage back to the angler during the fight.
Believe me when I tell you it does, and it makes our
delicate twigs capable of great feats.I don’t know enough about the physics of correct rod
bending ( I am thinking here of the senario of that 8lb
bass grabbing the fly) to explain it very well, but without
boasting I’ve used my #3wt to land fish of 7lb near cover
without ever coming close to breaking the rod.
(It did help that I wasn’t using MY rod the first time)Get Mr Morse to explain this properly on the forum as
it has opened up a whole new world of confidence for me.So Brian, what i would suggest is to buy a rod that feels sexy
when you cast it (whatever weight), beef up your leader a bit
and learn a different way of bending your rod when fighting
a fish rather than the traditional trout style of ‘high sticking’.
(Unless you need to high stick to cope with obstacles)Andrew

MemberOur Fly Fishing Download site fell to the same thing
last month. Just a disruption that cost $$$ to get fixed. If YOU are the one who wrote the virus, you are a
very smart person. Try working on a cure for cancer
or Middle East peace, far more rewarding results.(this is my 3rd draft – the other two were unprintable)

MemberThey can make you a better angler if you learn to fight them properly. Just don’t expect any respect for it.
Zach
Do we take this another step forward, and say that if
you fish with a guide it doesn’t count, because you didn’t
really earn the capture as it was the guides’ experience
that put you onto the fish?I think there might be something in this as it is sweeter
when you struggle and learn from your mistakes until
you finally succeed. THAT fish is worth more than any other.Andrew

MemberA case in point is the Barramundi we have here in
Australia. Similar I believe to your snook – Mr Morse
would know. These fish can be real pain in the neck. Some days
when all the conditions should be perfect, the sky
is the wrong colour blue and they won’t play.‘Barra’ are a trophy fish. Everyone wants to catch
a barra, but unless you’ve got the bucks for a top
guide like Bargy or Philiskirk, and can afford the
remote locations where they reside in numbers…
well your chances of getting a wild one are remote.
To add to this, they can be a fish of a thousand casts,
meaning that you have to put in a lot of effort.
(A tip is to get a guide with LOCAL knowledge)Unless you have spent some time with the PFP barra
to know something of what to expect when they hit
you in sight of structure, the story will go something
like this…
On the 999th cast, your brain filled with blue funk, you get
a hit. You high stick your rod almost breaking it in a state
of fright and fail to set the hook. 999 more casts? I don’t
think so, you sell your fishing gear and take up golf.Having a few PFP barras under the belt from some farm
or small impoundment will make you so hungry for the real
thing that you will be able to put in 2000 casts for that one
fish and have a better than average chance of landing it.When we finally get you down here Zach, get Mr Morse to
take you out with Bargy. You will love it.PFP & impoundment barra make you earn your capture, do
triploids fight?Andrew

MemberProstitutes have their place in our society, fortunately
or unfortunately. I would rather that some bloke went
to a prostitute to get his thrills than committed rape.
:-/If you are going to kill a fish for the table, kill a PFP
and eat that. (You may grow a third testicle if you eat
too many, but hey it would be a great ice breaker at
parties)
;DSome people just need to get a bend in their rod (talking
fishing here), and there is NOTHING wrong with that in my
opinion. When you do get that truly wild wary fish to the net,
the memory of those PFPs almost slip away entirely. You
are greatful for the skills they taught you though.Andrew

MemberMike – Glad you liked it. Peter and Simon had some good times during
the filming, some of it had to hit the cutting room floor though! 😮
Be warned though…
Some of the tying segments we have are ‘talking heads’, as this
was convenient at the time as Mr Morse had to do it solo.Ryan – it looks as if we will go ahead and make the iPhone format
available with the standard download at no extra cost. It will take a
while but we will then update all the other downloads to contain iPhone. Now I have to battle to get more space on the server. 😛
For those who haven’t downloaded the String Fly sample yet, I will
make it available until the end of September – tell your friends! Thanks IA for the feedback. If you have any more comments.. feel
free. We are sending the boss (John Haenke – camera man & producer)
over your way nexy year for a holiday and a bit of fact finding. So if
you see an Aussie in a FlyFishingDVD T-Shirt on your local water,
say “G’Day”.All the best,
Andrewandrew grabham
MemberMark – 11 year olds know what they are on about, much too clever for their own good – I’ve had one, Got one, and next year I’ll have another! 😀
Thanks for your input.Brian – we will take that on board, thanks.
Dear IA members, we really want to say thanks for the
way you have responded and are continuing to do so.Keep an eye out on this Bulletin Board from time to time
for free downloads that Zach will be giving out.Andrew

MemberThanks for the feedback so far guys, and to IA for the
opportunity to get some.Neal, thanks for your very kind words, and for letting me
know that the synch worked well. We have the right settings
on the format then. From the emails I have got from others (thank you) rather than posting, the reports are good.
The action in the fly tying was at an even pace, I will have to
make another 5 minute clip with some fishing action so you
can give me a report on how easy that is to view. That OK Zach?Simon – going to the Spotlight is now the highlight of my week too.
Strangely, the brown wool has all sold out!😮

MemberI have just been listening to the podcast with the
lady who guides in Alaska, Patricia Edel. I can only
imagine the sights she describes. It would be pretty
cool to see some images in the photoblog while listening
in. Just like when Morsie was describing to you the
queenfish that I am so familiar with when you interviewed
him a while back. Some of the country he was trying to
describe is impossible without a photo. You don’t need to go fishing this weekend do you Zach? 😮
A rew illustrations by Joe Tomelleri wouldn’t go astray. 🙂
