    Spanish Mackerel.

A mate of mine had one chase the fly to
the boat, leaping to take it at the rod tip!
It jumped head height between him and
his mate at the back of the boat, to land back
in the water on the other side. πŸ˜€

Getting a head butt from one of these fish
could really spoil your fishing trip.

Gee Zach, talk about kick a man
    when he is down!

We’re Aussies. (Kiwis have ugly sheep) ;D

Though they do have lots of trout.

Some cool things to think about:

I often can’t remember where I saw that article about ‘so and so’.
With a bit of forward thinking, AA can give me an active link index
    for the years subscription.

Reading ‘online’ for me give me the sh#ts, so the downloadable PDF
hits the spot nicely. I REALLY like the fly tying mag.

The ‘bathroom’ issue comes a distant second to the ‘bedroom’ issue.
I would rather have the digital edition than nothing.

As far as advertising goes – one click and I’m immediately browsing
their whole catalogue. You think they would have to be happy with
    that.

Hope I’m not too old to change. πŸ˜›

Zach, as is often the case, we can take people and services for granted.

I like the way the interviews are conducted, and the range of people
that are covered. I sometimes smile as views that are expressed
reflect what I have been thinking, but couldn’t put it into words. Often the views
are challenging to me – which is a great thing – it makes me think.

I like the lack of boasting and BS that usually goes hand in hand with
fish talk. So thanks for the service, keep it happening.

The photo section is great, as it gives me ideas for my own photos
so now I take less piccies of my thumb.

I have never seen it done in real life,
but it sure looks like a lot of commitment.
Check out this video that a friend put me
on to. This Korean lady sure can cast.

I think I’d like to give this a try.

I had the opportunity to be involved in a rod review recently. The TFO rods (three of them) scored very highly with all anglers present on the day, who came from a wide variety of backgrounds (salt & fresh). I was surprised by how much I enjoyed casting them.

Here is a photo my boss emailed me while I was hard at work! South Island New Zealand. Had to take the rest of the day off πŸ˜‰

I am going for my first trip in January, as I am FAIRLY certain it won’t snow then, but I just heard that Simon Chew say it is snowing there at the moment…. YUK!

The downturn in the economy won’t stop me fishing, it will
just dictate where I fish – closer to home. What has me
concerned is how will this effect the big players. Will they
stop promoting the sport? Will my mates who don’t fly fish YET
see even less fly fishing on TV, magazines and the web?
    :'(

Just found the photo of Peter’s 17lb wild fish.
Not bad on his #5wt – some fairly tense moments
    though.

    Craig,

what did you finally decide on?
A lot of good reading here, but
now the decision is yours. Just
make it a rod that you ENJOY to
cast, something that is going to
get you on the water even when
    the conditions aren’t perfect.

    All the best,

    Andrew πŸ™‚

    Travis,

thanks for the information on flies. That fish you are holding
is a beauty! I wish I could be there in the next week or so, but
I will put it on my wish list to be there for next season. I would
love to see how a fish like that puts a bend in a #6wt. Are fish
    that size a regular catch?
From the look of the background they live in some fairly rough
terrain. I imagine that the river bed would have its fair share of
fallen timber and places for them to smash you up in, so what
    pound leader
    are you using?

in reply to: New smallmouth set up, advice please #29612

    Guys,
can I ask a question here?

What flies are you casting for Smallmouth Bass?

I have heard it said that these bass are similar
to our Aussie bass – but that information is 3rd
hand. The type of fly I’m wanting to cast has much
to do with my rod selection – and line too.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Thanks for saying so. Glad you like them David. As for Peter’s quote, he was VERY excited that day!! I think it is up there with “I got a pig on the end of my rig!” This was one of those days when he rang to say “should have been here”. One thing is for sure David, I’m glad it was not me in charge of the net!!!! πŸ˜‰

    Hi all.
I’m Andrew, and I work for the guys who produce theflyfishingdvd.com.

Thanks for the review Zach, and coming from you that is high praise. Not to say that you are usually critical, but that you choose your words with care – occupational hazard I suppose. πŸ˜‰

Peter – you forgot to mention the Threadfin Salmon, and that one is my favorite. We will have a short trailer up on that story soon, but the other NZ stories are still a little way off.

I think maybe I have one of the best jobs in the world, except when I’m sittin’ in the office and Peter rings to say “Hey, you should have been here today…..”

Anyway, hope to see you guys on the site at some time, and if its OK I’ll make a post once in a while to kep you updated on what is available and what’s coming next.

If you guys have any trouble with the site, or just want some answers on the fish that are covered in the story, just fill out a contact form on the site and I’ll get back to you.

    Thanks for the opportunity Zach,

    Andrew.

PS Have a beer for me Mr Morse & shout the bar too!
