Excuse me. New York State is the birthplace of fly fishing in America.

Theodore Gordon is buried in Manhattan. The Angler’s Club is also here.

    Go Columbia (football)!

    Randy

you are getting over zealous here. There are different situations everywhere that you fish. If you want to be entitled to a hole, you have to work to get to it. New York rules don’t apply to the rest of the country.

I agree with dan, hogging entire runs is only permitted in steelhead holes imho. the more populated the river, the more open you should be to someone fishing into your hole. This only applies here on the east coast.

Out west, theres too much water to crowd folks over a hole.

    Welcome!

Are you planning on fishing with a guide? If so I would just use his stuff, In fact a lot of saltwater guides in the US would prefer for you to use their tackle, that way they have one less thing to worry about.

If you do want to get your own setup, like zach said, focus on the line. Tapers can drastically change the manner that certain rods will cast. I would go to (or call) a decent local fly shop and talk to them about what types and sizes of flies you plan on using and that will probably dictate what line/leader combo you should settle up with. When i am fishing for drum,

I plan my rod size based on the fly size and what will give me a better presentation. That being said most Atlantic reds on the flats could be handled with a 7-8wt. If you really want a versatile saltwater rod that will be able to handle a variety of situations, then I would go with a 9wt. A good 9 will handle most fish that you will encounter with exception of large tarpon and tuna, while still making smaller fish fun like 8lb reds.

If you are looking for an answer to “whats the best saltwater rod”, My advice is to go to a shop and cast a few rods to see what fits your casting stroke and your budget.

you might want to mention ethics with respect to boat traffic in runs while wading.

most boaters try pick a different run and go around waders, however it is not always possible if you are wading in the only passable run. If i am in a boat and that is the situation, I typically wait for a second and ask permission to pass through.

This is greeted with mixed results from wade fisherman. Beginner anglers do need to know that they should expect boat traffic if they are in the only passable run on a busy river.

Buzz, you answered my questions, I was looking at picking up a 7 or 8 for bones, reds, carp etc and have had my eye on a helios or a loomis crosscurent glx. I cant stomach the tag of the orvis and after casting a 3oz 7wt the loomis (and especially my dinosaur RPLX 8 wt) feel pretty heavy. Hell, for that price you could pick up a 7 and an 8

Zach, do you know why more rod companies are not using recoil guides? I would suspect price?

I have a loomis spinning rod with these and it is the best combination since peanut butter and jelly. Especially considering that spinning rod guides are notorious for bending out of shape.

Mike, Focus on the positive, and be thankful of what you still have; a young girl to call you daddy!

When I was at the firehole ranch in west yellowstone there was a rumor that they had tried to get F-HOLE for one of the ranch vehicles but it was shot down at the tag office. Dont know if its true or not.

Alabama still has to get past Auburn and LSU and then defeat the SEC east rival in the SEC Championship. A lot of things can still change in the next 4 weeks.

This season is one of the best examples yet of why we need a playoff system.

There are too many undefeated teams that deserve a fair shot PLUS the SEC is too tough to go undefeated.

I would like to see a top 8 playoff and take the 7 biggest bowl games to host them. best of both worlds imo.

I like old skin mounts as well. Especially the way that they yellow with age. I was under the impression that skin mounts were airbrushed as well?

Im probably going to get tomatoes thrown at me but I would love to see anyone besides a northwest all offense no defense pac 10 team vs big 12 sooners.

To me it would be a national travesty to not send the SEC winner to the big game. After all 5 out of 6 of the SEC west teams are in the top 25!

I feel like Michigan State is not getting credit that they deserve. The big 10 feels like a stronger confrence than the Big 12 and for sure is stronger than the PAC 10!

John, I bought an older canon 20-35 L from KEH with a bargain rating and i was very pleased with the results. There will be dings and scuffs on the metal but generally you are not going to have anything that would affect image quality or require work.

What about Cokin drop in stuff? I think I remember reading someones post on here in the past about using that system.

welcome Mike, Im guessing your lewwdog elsewhere?

Zach, its been 4 years I believe since we have stocked brownies in the upper hooch (maybe longer!). Its frustrating to see that we regulate harvest on a section that has about a 1% holdover rate and let folks chicken pick fish out of the portion healthy enough to sustain a natural population of browns. I could really get going but I will stay focused….
    welcome agian Mike
