MemberI couldn’t find a 1-800 number to manfrotto so I sent Customer Service an email two weeks ago. Still no reply.
A little discouraging…Oct 20, 2010 at 7:23 pm #71592Adam McDowell

Its not a 1-800 number but did you try this one?Oct 20, 2010 at 7:52 pm #71593Mike Anderson
MemberNot yet. When I first searched all I could find were numbers overseas. I found that number today after searching a little harder. I’m going to give it a try this week.

MemberUpdate: Manfrotto is sending me a new ball and stem for $16. It’s still a resin ball but at least I don’t have to throw a nice head away now.
I picked up a Gitzo 1541 last week to replace my antique Bogan legs that seemed like they weighed 15 pounds. I played with every tripod in the shop but when you open that gitzo up it’s evident why it has such a reputation. Rock solid and only 2 pounds.

Roy ConleyMemberI have pretty given up on any tripod or head you will find in most shops.

MemberThe guy in the shop made me a crazy offer on the 1541 Gitzo,, I left with it.

Finding a Gitzo in a local shop, not NY, is a small miracle.

MemberMike, that is an AWESOME tripod! I have the same model (not the 1541t but the 1541), which I use for travel and hiking. Is yours a “t” traveler or the original 1541? I don’t mind the minimal extra length on the 1541. You will love the tripod.
SO . . . what head are you going to pair with it? PM me if you need recommendations other than your Manfrotto.

MemberMine is not the Traveler its just the straight up 1541. I don’t know what head yet Neal. I’m open to suggestions but the Arca’s are going to be out of my price range until I get over this tripod purchase,,, and the 550 ex that I couldn’t turn down from craigslist today.. 😀
I’m jonesin to play start playing with multiple flashes and the Radio Popper system. But we’re headed to the White tomorrow so I don’t have time to play.
This was me and my youngest daughter playing with one flash and an umbrella at my grandfathers smokehouse.

Michael PhillippeMemberI’ve learned to check eBay for these types of things. I bought a used Manfrotto for $60 from a photographer who was upgrading to graphite. Mine is too heavy to pack around the woods but is great for the few times I really need it.

John BennettMemberIm going to echo what Buzz said.
If it’s in the budget and tripod work is important get the best tripod/head you can. Even if you need to save $$ for a period of time, in the long run its worth it.
*Do* take into account every possible application you might think of. Because they are all different. I decided on a Gitzo Carbon explorer. ( think its the 2227)
Why?
Well first because its sturdy enough for my body and heaviest lenses. But also because I wanted the offset, adjustable center column, rather than a straight head for macro work.
http://www.outbackphoto.com/reviews/equipment/canon_10D/400_sd9_0000_00210_GitzoExplorer.jpgThere are a number of good carbon makers out there now beyond Gitzo. Have a look at them if your yearning for Carbon.
Then give though to your head.
Gitzo, Really Right Stuff, Wimberly, Markins, Manfrottoregardless, try as much as you can to get the best (sturdiest) you can and if need be go to a shop with your heaviest body/lens and test

MemberI have been using the Induro C-314 for almost a year now. I purchased it from Andorama on sale for $249, I really scored on a awesome tripod IMO. This Induro tripod retails for a little more than double the amount of what I paid. It’s rock solid and very durable, it has been trouble free since day one!

Wow, that was an awesome deal.
I finally bit the bullet (12/13/10) and ordered the tripod I think will meet my needs, but admittedly, it is not a travel category killer if price is ignored.
