I love working with Maple, how long is that tail feather up top.
That’s a Lady Amherst tail feather, and it measures 37″.

I’ve got a Camelback backpack that is way too big for what I carry, but I put a 100 oz bladder in it, which I load first with ice. This not only keeps the water cooler longer, but it also cools my back when I’m carrying it. The Camelback also has attachments on the outside for two fly rods (I typically only lash the one on). In the main pouch I’ll carry a flask, trail mix, a couple of power bars, first aid kit, whistle, fire starting materials (be prepared) and some spare clothing layers.
I typically only use this when I’m walking a few miles in from the car (say Sam’s Creek in the Smokies). For shorter trips, I have a Sigg Bottle in an insulated holster that attaches to a fanny pack rig.
Thanks for the head’s up – I was just wondering if we’d have a cicada brood this year, and it looks like it is brood XIX, which is supposed to be pretty big.
If you come across a salmon egg jar, beer can, corn can, whatever – don’t just b*tch about the all the bubbas on the river, pick up the trash and pack it out with you.
