I’m trying to assess what users like best in fly boxes.
- What are some of your favorite fly boxes (brands)?
- Are you loyal to a brand or do you prefer function (those two can/are tied together)?
- Do you want a big box or one that can fit in the front pocket of your waders?
- Waterproof or not?
- Do you prefer to see the flies through the lid?
Dredging up a couple week old thread, but I am currently going through my fly boxes and rethinking things a bit.
I started out with the lower end C&F boxes, two of the smaller ones. I liked those well enough, but had problems occasionally with flies rusting in the bottom third of the boxes. I fish chest-deep on the Clinch at times, and the smaller boxes are anything but waterproof. I really liked the concept of the one with two small boxes for split shot, though. I also love the slit foam, especially for midges.
Zach’s talk was very informative – I learned quite a bit about how to get a good fishing-related photo.

You’re probably about to get a lot better advice from others, but I felt like I could chime in as I’ve been using my 8 wts almost as much as I use my 5 wts.
I think it’s a pretty safe general assumption that any company’s “Saltwater” 8’s are going to be among their fastest-action rods.
Great job Abe! Way to go, seriously. That’s a big hurdle to get over; you’re probably going to wear them out now that you have the monkey off your back. You probably caught a sheepshead with those vertical bars.
One tip, supposedly sea trout like a popper/dropper combo. That’s what I was told by the guys in Louisiana and they know what they’re doing. If you find an area with a little current rip, tie on a popper and run about 3′ of line off the bend of the hook (use a clinch knot to tie it on), then put a small clouser on there. Pop the popper like normal but also use it like an indicator. Seems like it would work.

Thanks Zach. I can honestly say that it would not have happened without your help on my casting. Both fish required casts of about 50′, dead into the wind. The whole time I was fishing yesterday I kept thinking “look at the reel spool, forward cast like a fencing thrust, tossing energy back and forth between the hands”. I was able to really reef on the double hauls and punch some line out when I wanted to.
There is a serious feeling of “monkey off the back” now.

I have a small quiver of 8wts available, however the area I’m fishing more now seems to be chock full of the 2 lb and under (sometimes much under) white and yellow bass.
PS, one of these days I am going to get a saddlemaker to custom-build me a monster one of these out of leather. If anyone knows of any of those out there, or a saddlemaker who would do it right for a reasonable price (I understand it will be expensive), please let me know. I travel with rods a lot and nothing is as durable as leather.

Really interested in seeing (and hearing) the video, but the background theme music makes it impossible to hear the explanation. I did a quick check and couldn’t easily find a “mute” button for the music.
On a second look, it appears that the Simms video you linked to autoplays when you bring up your page. You need to mute that before you can hear the tying video.
