MemberWilliam Joseph (I believe) has a new series of packs with Earth Magnets in them. I have seen one and the owner said the magnets are very strong. This might be an option and stop the corrosion issue.
Good luck, and I wish I fished flats enough to need a new lumbar pack 😉I got one a while back and the magnets are super strong but they did start to rust from inside. I have been using the Simms Flats Pack for a few months and it is absolutely awesome! Judging by the construction, (heavy zipper, waterproof, sealed seems etc.) I have a feeling this thing will last me a while.

Bob RigginsMemberI’ve been wanting to buy a new fanny pack (OK, lumbar pack) for quite a while, but the one I bought from Sports Authority for about $12.00 6 years ago refuses to die.

MemberNot designed for fishing, but the mountainsmith lumbar pack can’t be beat.
I have been using the same one since college and have taken it all over the place.

MemberI’ve been wanting to buy a new fanny pack (OK, lumbar pack) for quite a while, but the one I bought from Sports Authority for about $12.00 6 years ago refuses to die. It is light ripstop material with a main compartment, a secondary compartment big enough for a small fly box, and a webbed compartment big enough for tippet, plus a water bottle holder. It still amazes me that you can attach “fly fishing” to something and sell it for 5 times as much.
Very good point! Every once in a while you can get lucky and find something that is inexpensive and will actually last in a salty environment. When it comes down to it all you really have to do is keep things clean and lubed and it will hold up. My big issues with many previous packs have been zippers and comfort but If you keep them lubed they will be okay generally. I will say one thing though, the waterproof material on the Simms pack has come in handy a few times so far and the shoulder strap is a nice addition to keep the weight off the butt. Not the end of the world if your stuff gets wet but it makes for a much better end of day when your pack doesn’t have to be completely emptied out and rinsed so everything inside doesn’t turn to crust. Here is another cool one but may be a little small http://www.blackflyoutfitters.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=234&products_id=3927

I have been using the same one since college and have taken it all over the place. It holds a lot, is durable, and can be converted from hip to around shoulders (if encounter deep water), back pack, etc.
Extremely versatile:

Very cool!

http://www.simmsfishing.com/site/dry_creek_flats_pack.htmlI have not used the mag stuff in the salt, but its been fantastic for freshwater. I am positive that if you want to send your pack into WJ, they will replace it for you. 😉

Hadn’t even thought of that. Maybe if it gets bad enough I will give it a try. I have heard their customer service is great.

Bob RigginsMemberHey Zach, the water bladder sounds like a killer idea! I’m gonna’ have to look into that. The summer heat down here is brutal and we are always looking for ways to travel light and stay hydrated at the same time.
Brad,
I just noticed you are from beautiful Dunedin.
