I’ve been doing a lot of work lately to get my poppers ready for some bass in a few weeks. About a month or so ago I bit the bullet and bought a Copic airbrush. This system uses markers instead of paint, and therefore the cleanup is pretty much non-existent. It’s very easy to use and has great results.

If you are interested in more details you can check out my blog and see the original painting of the poppers or how I made the can of air still useful after it ran out of air.

I hope this is useful. I was reluctant to purchase the setup because of the cost, but once I got the can to be endless air, it made it easier to swallow the price.

I’ve been playing with some airbrush on some Musky foam flies also. I looked for that system you have but couldn’t find it. I’m not sure now if I want to go that route or go full out airbrush. I started with the testers kit and aerosol can.

The thing about the Copic compared to a full out airbrush is the ease of changing colors and clean-up. On the Copic I think there really is no issue with either one.

If you are interested in a full out airbrush let me know. I might be willing to make somebody a good deal on a slightly used one.

Ronnie, you are correct. With the Copic I can switch colors quicker than it takes me to write this sentence. Plus, no clean up. (of course, I have no experience with any other airbrush)

I can literally pull this out, spray one popper, and put it away in a few minutes. I painted all these at the dining room table with a piece of newspaper to catch the over spray.

Also, for me, having a cheap way to do it was key. That’s why I started with just a few markers and a can….then jacked up the can to make it reusable without paying for another can or compressor.

I’ve had one for about three years now.  It’s a great little tool.  Glad to see it’s starting to catch on a bit.  Here are a few of examples:

Curtis, it’s your fault I bought one. After seeing your flies and video I just couldn’t resist anymore.

Those flies all look amazing.  Except that Turbo Popper, which looks like an enemy from Halo. 🙂

Where can you get these Copic setups and how much do they cost?  Another advantage of markers is the paint shouldn’t eat through softer materials like spray paint can do.

Also, long shot, but would the sprayer hook up to a Preval spray can?

You can probably get it the easiest on Amazon.

I found the air compressor kit at my local art supply store for $36.

Zach – The first picture in this post (Can, spray head, 4 markers) cost me $50. Of course, after rigging it up to run from the bike pump, I don’t foresee any new cost unless I want new colors.

Abe – I have plans to try this on a crease fly, I just haven’t gotten to it yet. I believe the last, and third to last photos that Curtis posted have foam heads and therefore show that foam should work out just fine.
