Stay away from color preserver!!!
Use Rod Bond instead of 5 min epoxy. It will take longer to build but it gives you room for error whereas 5 min is very unforgiving. Once you get a few under your belt you can use the 5 min.
Experiment some. Don’t build to factory specs, this is why you build your own rod in the first place. Play around with single foot guides, and Ceramic’s on 6wt’s and up.
If you need an arbor use the new flexcoat arbors, they are head and shoulders above the rest. Most fly rods do not require arbors.
Don’t skimp on components.
ALWAYS HAVE DENATURED ALCHOHOL, A PAPER TOWEL, AND A FLAME OF SOME SORT CLOSE BY WHEN FINISHING.
Flame your wraps.
Don’t attempt to use finish when it’s under 70 degrees in the room!!! The hotter the better.
Burnish every wrap and use some good lighting to inspect them for gaps
Don’t try to make your finish last too long. When it starts getting sticky throw it away and mix more. It’s cheap as hell and this is the most important step cosmetically speaking IMO.
Take great pain when measuring out and mixing your finish!!! Many people including myself screw this one up. It has to be just right or it won’t dry.

Fuji is top shelf and well worth the extra$$$

MemberCameron I’ve said many times that we are blessed with an extremely diverse fishery here in Middle TN. I rarely ever drive over two hours for a fishing trip unless I’m going to the ocean. I also don’t get caught up targeting only one species of fish. I am always looking for something new where there aren’t many people. Fly Fishing has opened up a whole other fishery again for me. I’ve caught most all of these fish on gear and now I want one on the fly.

MemberCarter I’ve built quite a few rods mostly spinning and casting on Batson blanks and I loved them! I would still be building on them but they sold out a perfectly brand new factory in WA and went overseas to make their blanks. Since then, I don’t buy them. I know they are still great blanks and I know they are great people to deal with but you gota stand for something and I chose this.
Give Dan Craft Five Rivers blanks a look sometime. The FT is a rocket for around $120. You might get put on a waiting list as I just looked and several are backordered. I guess it must be building season.

MemberBD correct me if I’m wrong here but didn’t the Sturgeon population suffer overfishing and harvesting of the eggs? I guess they are just a lowere grade Caviar then beluga but caviar all the same. I want to say there was once a healthy population of them here at one time???

MemberI think yall are trying to reinvent the wheel. My,,, well, Ron’s Minn Kota Powerdrive has a very small footprint and was never in my way at all. Most all the boats I have owned had the motor mounted in the extreme front V of the boat and they worked out just fine. It’s just not very often you want to stand or fish that far on front of the boat. To make a closet mount would do one of two things. 1 it will eat up space under the floor or 2 it will eat up space above the deck. Both variations will add weight and that is where it most likely dies from a manufacturing standpoint. I think if you don’t see a boat that suits you from the factory buy a hull with the design you like and build the interior yourself.

MemberDunfly nothing would make me happier then if TWRA would stock our lakes with some sort of freshwater Great White shark. Hell I’ll settle for Alligators, Piranha, Anaconda, anything that will get some of the wakeboard crowds off the water in warm weather. 😉
SS I think there’s plenty of land if you drive an hour or two from Nastyville. I also hunted them as a young boy and those are some fine memories. I can still see my dad in his brown and blaze orange jacket working those dogs over, and smell that aroma that a clean Remington 1100 makes like it was yesterday.
There’s always Pheasant Creek Preserve….

MemberWow that’s a great design! Brodin makes some fine nets for sure. I am in the market for a boat net so I’ll see what they have.
Mike Anderson
MemberYes. That one I don’t care for.
I would really like to see more effort restoring the numbers of Quail in our state and less dumping of dead Trout into warm water streams and ponds. If they do as good a job on Quail as they did with the Turkeys then we will all own bird dogs again some day.

MemberI am excited about this too SS. It’s good to see TRWA spending money wisely. Future generations will appreciate this resource.

MemberThanks.
Creeklover are you from around that area? I also have a denim shirt and jacket with that logo and I can’t tell you haw many times people stop me to tell me they have been to that place. They have one of those logos that IMHO looks so good people just remember it.
I wish I was there standing on the jetty casting a big Clouser right now. Then I’d eat a dozen Apalachicola bay oysters and a bunch of steamed Royal Reds.

MemberYou know come to think of it nothing I tried had the fingers and there is something to be said for those. I can defiantly see how they would help manage the loops. Now you got me thinking. Hmmm, might need a little mind altering to figure this one out. I’ll be back later.

MemberCarter I’ve tried a multitude of contraptions, belts, and baskets, and nothing worked as good as just dealing with it on the floor. My boats have decent clutter free casting decks plus I switch from the left to right side of the boat alot and this is a problem with a stationary basket. Not to mention that since I’m on a tight budget my boats are small so deck space comes at a premium. In the summer I just go barefoot and it isn’t as big a problem. But when I’m in wading boots I admit it, I step on my line and I’ve ruined some lines by doing it.
Mike Anderson
MemberI have used one multi tip line on a 6wt and I absolutely hated it. It seemed like the hinge point was always in the way.
The best solution for wading and sinking lines would be to invest in an LL Bean plastic stripping basket. The bottom line is you have to keep the running line out of the water if you plan to get much distance with your casts. The norm cast for a line like that is 60+’.Mike Anderson
MemberFor tailwater Striper I use a 7-10wt Fast action Broomstick/rod, Orvis Wonderline Depth charge 350-500 grain integrated shooting head line.
For a leader I use 3′ of 50# mono joined to my fly line with an Albright knot and a 3′ piece of 20# Fluro attached to the 50# with an another Albright knot. For the 8wt I would strongly recommend the 300 to 350 grain with a 30′ head. It’s the cats meow once you master casting it without stepping on your running line… ::) This advice is only good if you are fishing from a boat or the bank as casting this line while wading is next to impossible.Mike
