Thanks Zach. We started a wildlife picture thread over at the “lodge”. I’d like to see a few of yours and others favorite shots from this year.

in reply to: Wading boots #14714

Am I missing something here. I consider a pair of wading boots to be worn out once the felt is gone. Therefore a boot is no better then its felt as far as durability goes, and most felt is the same right? Do you guys resole your boots??

in reply to: Wading boots #14693

“If I was to give you 150.00 what wading boot would you buy?”

The Cabelas Lightweight for $50. Mine lasted three years and they are comfy and easy to get on and off. I mean they’re all made in Asia somewhere anyway…

Then I’d spend the extra $100 on a trip somewhere to try them out.

Don’t go there if you have an IS build box at work or you might get yourself fired.

in reply to: regular mono vs Fluoro: no BS allowed! #14360

My introduction to fluro was live baiting with downlines to Hybrid and Striper. About the time I first tried it, for reasons I don’t remember other then it was new, my catch rates went up tremendously. Keep in mind this is live bait fishing with downlines. Not much skill is required from the angler once you find the fish with the electronics. It was from that point on I used it religiously.

    I couldn’t PM Carter.

in reply to: regular mono vs Fluoro: no BS allowed! #14352

Yes, it makes a huge difference where I fish. You don’t have to pay $10 for 30 yards either. Buy Seaguar Carbon Pro 100% fluro in 2,4,6 pound test and respool it on a tippet spool. I think its $15 for 250 yards. I also keep a spool of “real” 7x just in case they get real picky.

in reply to: Where possible… #14303

I don’t currently subscribe to any magazines but after reading Phil’s replies to that thread I’ll be supporting AA from now on. Zach you’re fortunate to have him as a friend.

in reply to: Where possible… #14301

Since I was a gear fisherman first and not born  immersed in a cold Trout steam high atop a Mountain in Colorado my opinion is most likely of little value. But I will say that a lot of fly fishermen (NOT ALL OF US) can be the biggest bunch of whining, moaning, wanna be fisherman, I’ve ever encountered in my life! Shut up and fish for Gods sake!

I also think if you are going to throw out negative comments and hate posts at someone AT LEAST have the gonads to use your real name…

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14215

Really? I didn’t know that Zach, that explains alot. I wouldn’t Target those fish either.
What about the 38 that was caught on the North fork?

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14212

“And if you run into people who still insist on fishing the spawn, you could always point them to some local fisheries that have no natural reproduction, and tell them about all the “hogs” there”

The current world record Brown most likely spent his first year of life in a concrete raceway…

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14205

    EyetoFish:
I should start out by saying that neither of the two rivers I fish are 1. Natural Reproducing rivers and 2. Crowded with anglers during Fall.

I can with say with 99.999% certainty that all the Trophy fish we have caught Summer and Fall are stocked Trout.

I won’t even get into the argument that catching 20”+ Browns isn’t fun or sporting… :-/

It’s nice to pretend we’re doing the right thing and letting the little Trouties spawn only to have the eggs washed away, dried out by falling water, or robbed by the overcrowded and starving stocker Rainbows. I’m glad some feel that way, it makes it less crowded.

I really am a conservative angler. I catch and release 99.9% of everything I catch. But, bottom line; I’m a fisherman not a conservationist.  I’ll leave the regulations to the professionals. When they tell me I can’t, then I won’t.

It’s been a good clean discussion guys. Most of the “spawn rapers” won’t speak about it publicly. In fact alot of them will look you in the eyes and lie their ass off about doing it. I fish for Browns all year and the fact that they are in shallow water during the Fall is just the way it is.

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14204

Stocking trucks may carry brown trout to your rivers to BOOST your population, but they don’t everywhere.

I understand that Phil and I don’t fish to Spawning fish anywhere but in rivers that do get stocked.

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14201

“Trout are trout, and they seek to survive, thrive and reproduce. Let’s let ’em.

What about Bream, Crappie, Bass, Pike, Salmon, Musky, Catfish, Carp, Striper, Gar, etc, etc, etc, etc. Why do we only want protect the Spawning Trout whose population gets a HUGE boost from the stocking trucks vs other fish who have somehow survived ON THEIR OWN despite mankind’s brutal desire for spawn raping for centuries.

in reply to: Raping the Spawn? #14187

Thank you Carter you saved me alot of typing strokes. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

I’m a firm believer that the regulations set by a group of DEGREED fishery Biologist’s are enough to protect these fish. The river I mainly fish is 70 miles of cold water with big Browns along every inch of it. And on top of that the DNR dumps thousands more in every year. I pay good money for this and I plan to enjoy it every opportunity I get. And yes, I fish for the big Browns all year, and I catch them in the warmer months too. Just not as many or as easily.
However I do see how it would be disgusting to walk up to your river and see 40 anglers standing in the Redds.

Ohhhh and BTW the this fall just as the Browns were dropping their eggs the Corp decided to run the river full bore for about a month straight now. I don’t think those millions of eggs made it…. Maybe people should start preaching to the ones who are really hurting the fishery…

That’s beautiful Steve thanks for sharing.

in reply to: D200 Arrives, 7″ of Snow Predicted in Arkansas #14109

I wish you would have driven up there so you could haul my boat back. It’s waiting in Mtn Home but I think I’ll pass on an AR trip this weekend…

Where did you end up buying the D200?

in reply to: a few flies #55252

    Thanks guys!

Carter if I had a good way to crimp the wire I would have gone that path. Do you recommend a good wire crimping system? I am new to wire so maybe there is a better way. I tried crimping a bite leader last year with my electrical crimpers but it didn’t last very long.

Zach sometimes mixing in just a few long bucktail hairs will help hold everything together better.

in reply to: Perceived Value #13940

Dunfly I agree that saltwater is a whole other ballgame. I wouldn’t go gunning for Striper with a wal Mart rod either.

I hear ya on the Lamson I just bought 2 of the LS2’s for $119 each + 20% off. I couldn’t pass that one up.

in reply to: Perceived Value #13931

Good posts guys. I’m not knocking high end rods at all, I own a few myself. I evolved just as many have done. I started out with an entry level rod and when I couldn’t cast it very well I assumed a more expensive rod would solve my casting problems. That’s what the magazine ads say and in a way they did. They let me know my casting error couldn’t be my rod because it was the best money could buy. The faster actions helped me become a well rounded caster able to switch rod actions without missing a beat.

The confidence factor has alot to do with many aspects of fishing and in fly fishing confidence in your gear is very important. Owning a name like Winston or Sage or Orivs is owning a piece of fly fishing history. I see nothing wrong with it and I’ll continue to support these companies no matter how senseless it might seem sometime.
