The Itinerant Angler…I prefer to reserve comment on the praise and criticism we get at American Angler, however, this thread may merit discussion, particularly since I seem to be the source of the angst, and all the comments appear to have been lodged at this point (I have been following along for several days):

I feel obligated to point out on behalf of American Angler that they are by no means the only outfit guilty of employing me.

MemberInteresting discussion Zach, glad you pointed it out. Language is indeed a living, evolving organism; just check out the words that are constantly added to the OED. Not unusual for a generation to feel threatened when a different sort of folk adopts “their” pastime. Praise to Phil for deftly handling the debate.

MemberWow.
That must have taken a lot of self-restraint to keep from responding in that thread.

Joel ThompsonMemberZach, Don’t let these guys change the way you write and teach people about fly fishing. The articles I have read of yours have been very informative and written in a manner that is both entertaining and educational. I don’t think in any way shape or form are you doing anything in your writing that degrades the sport of fly fishing. You are obviously a smart guy and one who speaks from the heart and it shows in your articles. I have spoke with many of my clients about you and I have always got the impression that they feel the same way as I do. Hell, that’s why I’m always trying to coax you back to Montana! I know at least a dozen of my clients that would love to learn from you myself included.
Keep up the good work and don’t change who you are because of what someone else thinks!

ps- Is there anywhere I can read your most current American Angler articles online? The B&N here in Missoula was sold out of it.

MemberZack,
First, I believe a diploma means nothing in terms of ones writing ability.

MemberWell I have a few points about that discussion.

Cameron MortensonMember(but I also agree this young hipster is ruining fly fishing)
Damn Zach…I guess all things wrong with the sport are your fault now.

MemberThe reason I subscribed to AA last month is for fresh writing and fresh photography … The reason I spend time on this board is because of the openness of ideas and sharing of your photography techniques … being an aspiring photographer your success is an inspiration.
Keep up the good work and be proud!
BTW: I got word earlier this week that TU will be using one of my shots for a direct mailer … That would not have happened if I had not been inspired by what your doing and specifically by your photography podcast last year. Thanks!

MemberYou know…I have noticed something similar when speaking with some other (older) folks about some of the new extreme-esque fishing videos out there.

MemberSince I was a gear fisherman first and not born immersed in a cold Trout steam high atop a Mountain in Colorado my opinion is most likely of little value. But I will say that a lot of fly fishermen (NOT ALL OF US) can be the biggest bunch of whining, moaning, wanna be fisherman, I’ve ever encountered in my life! Shut up and fish for Gods sake!
I also think if you are going to throw out negative comments and hate posts at someone AT LEAST have the gonads to use your real name…

MemberZach, you are a 20 something hotdog with work in national publications and are doing what many wish they could have/should have. That in and of itself is going to create a reaction from some negative and jealous people. Your writing style has nothing to do with it. If you are happy with your work and your employers are happy with your work, then I think you would be foolsih to concern yourself with such people. Drive on.
