Nice flies Paul. I think I’ll tie up a few.

in reply to: Maxima Pound Test… #15109

Buzz I’m sure your right when comparing it to something like Rio’s powerflex or whatever they call it tippet. I stand corrected. I should have said its some of the strongest per diameter line in the world that doesn’t cost $55 for 200 yards. ;D Have you tried the sheet knot? It is different but hey it just might work.

Zach the real test is (I get to do this test often) when you hang up on something and have to break 17# fluro. That’s when the nail knot used to let me down. You gota try it sometime Zach, you’ll convert.

Nail knots suck guys. God I’m gonna get slammed for that comment. I use this and nothing has ever caused it to fail, ever! Great knot and EAAAASY to tie.

Maxima is a great line. The six pound is some of the strongest per diameter line in the world IMO. Some of the guides I’ve talked to even say that the ultragreen is less visible then Fluro? I’m sure I’ll get slammed for that one too.

    Nice post Mike.

in reply to: What Makes a Fly Fisher? #15036

Everybody has their own idea of what makes a fly fisherman, if you only fish dries, fur and feather flies, etc, etc. Bunch of BS IMO but if it makes someone feel like they’re better then the rest of the “bait chunkers”, then more power to them. I just hope I never have to share a boat or a stretch of water with this kind of person. Fishing twice a year doesn’t make anyone an expert but IMO it might make them a fisherman. Being a fisherman, fly or otherwise is more then casting a line out. It’s a way of life and a mindset. I grew up hunting all kinds of animals with my folks but my heart was always on the water with a fishing rod in my hand. I haven’t been in the woods with a gun in over four years, but I still call myself a hunter. I still have the weapons and the knowledge and one day I’ll get back into it.

I may just do that here pretty soon Davy.

The Striper will be anytime from early Spring (Spawn run) to late Summer. I prefer Summer since the weather is more predictable. Spring is when the record hunters go after them and it can be a little crowded but not too bad usually.

There were Shad coming thru the Dam on the Caney last week. I saw a Crow pick three off the surface but it’s not fully on yet. A Bald Eagle was also watching the river pretty closely but I think he had Trout on his mind. This cold snap should get things moving in the right direction. I was told by a fellow with an underwater camera that there are Walleye in the upper section of the river as long as your leg. He informed me there were fish stacked on top of fish. I plan to spend a little time trying for those guys next trip. A chartreuse and White Clouser fished deep is a Walleyes worst enemy. We spanked the Sauger on them last Spring.

Thanks for the schooling Davy! I still think my scud will beat your scud so I guess I’ll have to come over there and fish side by side with ya for a few days at BSD and we’ll find out.

in reply to: My humpback scud #55335

Yea these are thinner then they look and you can adjust the size(caliber) of the stamp or hook to meet the end of the curve where you want it. I do use Mono thread to segment.

Today on my way home I imagined a sowbug made from flat lead wrapped with grey marabou and a shell back segmented with mono. I make a scud from strands of marabou that works pretty good.  I didn’t have time to tie it because my dog decided my bucktails were chew toys.. I had to clean up his mess. Little yapper dogs make a big mess when you splat them against the wall.

    ;D

Davy I honestly don’t know one way or the other. What I do know is that confidence plays a major role in any type of fishing. So if a more realistic pattern helps confidence, then maybe it is worth the effort.

Sometimes when I’m tying I’ll play a movie in my head of a Big Brown sitting in a run taking bugs as they pass by. I imagine him responding to my fly but then at the last millisecond,, he turns away. Then I try to make a fly that he won’t turn away from.

MikeA, if you’re sure in your convictions, I have an el-cheapo rod I’ll let you use while I’ll use the same weight and length in one of my favorite rods and we’ll have a go at it.
    You game?  😉

Sure and while were at it lets also invite Lefty and see if he can keep up with just his arm.

in reply to: daves shoot out: sage, orvis, winston #14843

I think at that distance a real good caster could take a $19 Wal-Mart fly rod and hit the mat on cue most every time. IMO all rods have their own personalities, none of which are worth 5 to $600 more then a basic entry level stick of graphite.
I own several Sage, St Croix, Dan Craft, Cabelas, and Loomis rods. I just bought a St Croix Premiere on clearance for $50 that casts ((((to me)))) every bit as good as any I’ve casted. I like owning the best as much as the next guy but the idea of a high dollar rod making someone cast better is,, well, a dream.  :-X

Thanks guys it isn’t new and I’m sure someone has already done this sort of thing. I have seen some store bought scuds that looked similar but I was never able to get mine to look as good. Scuds are a major part of most tailwater Trout’s diet and also one of my go-to flies when fishing a tailwater. I spend a lot of my tying time trying to perfect Scuds. The article that lead me to play with twist on lead in the first place, suggested you cut small segments into a triangle shape for scuds. I just took it a step further towards a more realistic outline. The one in the picture is a 16 but a larger riffle shell will make a larger scud. I’m working on one now that I’ll name the 44 mag! ;D

Sowbugs come to mind as another great pattern where this stuff would be very useful. The flat profile would be easily achieved with twist on. You might have to cut it in half long ways to get the thickness right.

Thanks I’m loving it right now man. I really have nothing but great things to say about Supreme boats so far. It’ll float fully loaded with three people in it, in 2″, and run in anything over 3″. That doesn’t do you much good when there’s waders everywhere but I fish alot of places where that isn’t a big problem. We hit a gravel bar for the first time last Sat. The boat never stopped, it just slid past it. We went back to see how deep it was and the water wasn’t even over the top of my wading boots. No damage whatsoever to anything on the boat or motor except a little paint missing off the intake grate.

There might be alot of people who’ll try to convince you not to buy a jet because of all the negative characteristics. If you plan to operate a boat in water less then 8″ alot…..Don’t listen to them. I ran props motors for a long time and I’ll tell you this, you can have em.

Nice Mike, lets see some more pictures.

This Ken Abrames book “A Perfect Fish, Illusions in Fly Tying” is excellent.

Very nice! I’d love to come down and do a Red trip sometime. Been toying with a Venice Tuna/Red trip for several years now.

Thanks alot guys!!! Zach it means even more coming from you buddy. BTW I’ve been bragging about your backlight shots to everybody. That is some creative thinking dude!

I can’t tell you how many times I had my finger on the right mouse button and the pointer hovered over the add Nikon D80 Camera bundle to cart button. Its an urge I fight almost weekly now…
