Lots of trip reports lately, thought I might check in from the Louisiana marsh. Prime redfishing right now, as the big reds move into the marsh for the winter to cruise the shallow flats for food and warmer water. The ride out to the flats was bitter cold, but the fishing was worth it.

We scouted a new area of the marsh around Port Sulphur and found some good water with deep channels and broad flats. Almost immediately after we cut the engine and started to pole I stuck a red only 4 feet from the boat. Hard to set the hook at that distance, and he got off after a blistering 50′ run that started out underneath the boat. (Wish I could have seen myself reaching to put the butt of the rod up while the tip surged under the boat.)

Anyway, the next fish was a 13 lb. red that broke the tip section of my rod as my buddy Chas tried to lip him with the boga. Tough luck, but a good fish. Thank goodness for lifetime warranties. I borrowed Chas’ rod and five minutes later hooked up with a 22-pounder. That’ll warm you up in a hurry! Caught a few more fish before noon, and the action slowed by lunchtime so we headed back.

Carter, check your PM – my browser quit unexpectedly when I hit “send” but it looks like it might have gone through. Let me know?

Very nice! I’d love to come down and do a Red trip sometime. Been toying with a Venice Tuna/Red trip for several years now.
