Tim AngeliMemberAwesome fish Andrew!
Tim AngeliMemberJohn,
Are you looking for a traditional rod or a switch rod? From what you describe using the rod for, it sounds like a switch rod might be worth looking into.
While I don’t have any experience with Beulah rods personally, I’ve heard great things and their 10’6″ 4/5wt. switch rod sounds like it might fit the bill for what you’re looking for.
http://www.beulahflyrods.com/products/switchrods/switchrods4-5wt.phpThe Orvis Helios is at a significantly higher price point than you mentioned and might be a little faster action than you prefer, but they are outstanding rods and I know people love the 10-footers. They make a 10′ 4wt. normal single handed rod.

Orvis just recently introduced the Hydros line, which to my understanding is basically a more budget-minded rendition of the Helios line. They don’t currently carry anything in the 10 foot length in the Hydros line, but you might want to keep your eyes peeled to see if they release something like that in the future. In the Helios line they also have an 11′ 5wt switch, as do a number of other companies if you’re interested in going that route. The Sage 10′ 4wt. Z-axis is another favorite for people that like the 10 footers. Again, it might be a little faster than you prefer and it’s at a high price point, but the Z-axis rods are another awesome line of sticks.

Tim AngeliMemberJarrad,
You probably already found these, but here are a couple results that google comes up with.
Tim AngeliMemberI have one that I bought just because it looked like fun.
Tim AngeliMemberTodd,
I don’t know anything about the Orvis “tippet” Superfine specifically, but I have an Orvis Superfine Trout bum 7’6″ 4pc. 3wt and absolutely love it. It’s a gem of a rod and can handle anything you throw at it. I love throwing dries with it, but it can easily handle a weighted double nymph rig or streamers. I’ve fished it all with this rod and landed some very respectable fish on it. It’s by far one of my favorite rods to fish. It’s just downright fun to fish.
Not sure if that helps because I don’t know when the Tippet Superfine was made, but if it’s similar to the current model then it’s an awesome rod.
These fish were all caught on said rod:

Tim AngeliMemberThat weight difference would barely be noticeable, and I would also keep in mind what rod you’re putting the reel on. If the rod is relatively heavy its nice to have a little extra weight on the reel to balance it. On the contrary, if the rod is really light (a helios for example) its nice to get a really light reel to best balance the rod. Unless you’re fishing the lightest of rods, I wouldn’t use a 10% weight difference as the sole reason to choose one reel over the other.
I’m not sure what you’re looking to use this 6 weight for, but keep in mind that it’s very infrequent that you need 100+ yards of backing. Honestly, I can’t think of any freshwater situation that you would need that much backing. Definitely not for trout, bass, etc. Carp can run you well into your backing, but 100 yards is a hell of a long way. If you’re using it for salt, that’s a different story.
Good luck. I’m sure you’ll be happy with whichever one you choose.

Tim AngeliMemberA synthetic long sleeve fishing shirt….like the ones made by Columbia and Ex-Officio……IN CAMO PATTERN! For those of us that chase brookies. They would sell a ton of ’em in my opinion. They could be used during archery and dove season in the Deep South as well. The possibilities are endless……..I’d call it Brookie-flage.
Steve, just FYI, patagonia currently makes a camo shirt like you are describing.
Tim AngeliMemberKeith,
I don’t have a Guru specifically, but I do have a couple of Lamsons and absolutely love them.
Tim AngeliMemberI met this guy on the Madison, where he guides in the summer. Sounds like a really good dude. I was supposed to chase reds for a day with him but it got cancelled due to hurricane Ida.
The conference you’re going to isn’t DDW by any chance is it?
Tim
Tim AngeliMemberAwesome shots Jason!
Tim AngeliMemberTim, for your next epic fishing journey, I’d suggest the salt.
Mark, I totally agree. I need to get into the salt sometime soon. Although I think 3 weeks on the South Island, NZ over Christmas might not be too bad either… 😉
Tim AngeliMemberMichael,
http://www.washingtonflyfishing.com is another site that has a TON of pacific northwest steelhead fanatics on it.
Good luck,
Tim
Tim AngeliMemberMark,
Great photos!
Tim AngeliMemberTodd,
What sort of time do you consider to be “spring time?”
Tim AngeliMemberAwesome!
Tim AngeliMemberI still don’t understand the want or need for a felt sole or why people would not want to switch over from felt –> rubber.
Felt gives far superior traction.
Tim
edit: Tim Scott’s reply posted while I was typing this one.
Tim AngeliMemberJason,
I leave for NZ next Monday.
Tim AngeliMemberJason,
Good looking shots.
Tim AngeliMemberLL Bean duffel bags are great. Tons of sizes so you can get whatever fits your needs, quality construction, very durable, they don’t have a bunch of useless pockets that you don’t need, and in my opinion they are priced very reasonably. I used an XL one for a long time to cart my fishing gear around and it worked great. It happened to belong to a girlfriend who is now an ex so the bag is also an ex, but I will likely replace it with one of my own.
Tim
Tim AngeliMemberI dig the pictures.
