I fish the Flint River in middle Georgia for Shoal Bass. There diet consists of black helgrammites. We have success dead-drifting black wooly boogers. I’m sure someone has tied up an accurate imitation but the WB seems to work just fine for us.

The episode titled, “Planet Carnivore” has some underwater videography shot by Mark Emery. I fished with Mark this past summer on the Naknek and he was in the midst of filming the grizzlies chasing the sockeye at Brooks Falls…for Discovery Channel. He was relating a story about how he was tethered underwater…about 100 yards behind his boat, filming salmon in about 4 feet of water. All of a sudden he sees a set of grizzly legs swimming toward the camera lens….at which time a grizzly presses his nose against the lens. Mark gave me a roughcut dvd of the footage and it is unreal!

Mark is a top-notch fishing guide as well. Based out of King Salmon, AK….the Naknek is his home water during the summer.

Here’s my list of overnight backcountry favorites in YNP:

Slough Creek near the Park Boundary (above 3rd Meadow)
Lamar River above Cache Creek
Yellowstone River (Black Canyon) if you can hit the salmonfly hatch
Grizzly Lake/Straight Creek for my brookie fix
Grebe Lake/Upper Gibbon for my grayling fix
Yellowstone River/Thorofare Area
Heart Lake
McBride lake
Shoshone Lake
…and this year I plan to visit Bechler! These are areas that offer a degree of solitude, beauty and good fishing. I agree with Dave….there are areas outside the Park that are as good or better. I prefer the Park….and this may sound strange….because the Park Service offers so much more oversight when it comes to enforcement and regulations. At times it can be a hassle (like the reservation system) but I’ve always had great experiences in the Yellowstone backcountry and continue to return.

There are dozens more “favorites” that don’t require an overnight stay. I like Craig Matthews Yellowstone fishing guidebook for hiking mileages and stream details. I’ve found it to be fairly accurate and up-to-date.

I’m with you Richard….not enough faith to put my camera in it. I guess the attraction of this particular design is the ability to use a flash without having to buy a big dollar strobe kit. I thought I had an interest in underwater photography until I started pricing housings and strobes.

I love watching it for the scenery as much as the content. He has some awesome footage of rising trout!

I backpack the Park as much as possible. Only missed one summer (last year went to Alaska) in the past 10 years or so. I typically stay in the backcountry for 4 or 5 days at a time. I take a break and stay one night in a lodge and then head back in for another dose of cutthroat fishing. If I can help you out, let me know. I’m headed out for 3 weeks late-July/early August.

I floated the Alagnak River in Alaska last summer with a few friends. In eight days we counted 42 grizzlies. Thirty-eight (38) were classified as “close enough” and four (4) fit into the “too close” catagory. All were well behaved I must say and were there (like us) for the salmon!

Tex…If you’re staying in Island Park, I’m assuming you might be fishing the Henry’s Fork, Harriman Ranch area. A good place to stay is the A-Bar Hotel in Last Chance. It’s “good” because it’s cheap, next to the river, Henry’s Fork Angler’s and Trouthunter Flyshops are across the highway, bar/restaurant downstairs with cold beer and a jukebox, mom-and-pop restaurant across the street with awesome blueberry pancakes. Disclaimer: The A-Bar is not a 5-star hotel…..so if you are taking your wife….probably need to spend more money and upgrade. If you are with a bunch of crusty old men…this is the place. You can even see guys in the waders sitting at the bar! There are fish hooks in the carpet and caddis hanging on the screen door. Clientele is primarily guides and out-of-town fishermen.

Like Mr. Patten stated previously, Beach Camera has served me well. I bought my D70s and some odds and ends from them last year with no problems. I’ve also had good luck with Amazon.com. Best of all….no followup telephone calls asking me to purchase accessories from them.
