I’m partial to my Big Green Egg. I can load it with lump charcoal, stabilize the temp, put an 8 pound butt on…..and in 12 hours I have fall-off-the-bone bar-b-que. It’s that easy…..Of course it ain’t cheap.
Although the announcers did mention it, some of the talking heads didn’t……….the Mountaineers were Division 1AA Champions the past two years. These guys just didn’t fall off the cabbage truck. Great football team and you won’t find a prettier setting for a football stadium.
For the life of me….I can’t figure why Michigan would schedule them.
I know what you mean Zach…..I’m about 50 miles south of you. The only fish that are active down here are the gar. I’m trying to put together a trip to Arkansas next month. If that doesn’t pan out….I’ll wait for Fall or Winter. When’s the best time of year to fish the White or Norfork? (Note-I’m in to big as opposed to lots of fish)

Zach….be forewarned. If you decide to venture to Athens….do not….and I repeat….do not wear your Tennessee gear. I went to Athens once and had beer poured on me. Of course I did have on my Georgia Tech hat and the Jackets had just defeated the Dogs in football.
I also own the Stowaway Wading Jacket. I wore it virtually non-stop in AK last summer. Rained everyday and I was dry as a bone. We were float fishing so no strenuous activities….so I can’t vouch for breathability.
I have no complaints and would purchase another if needed.

I feel the same way about ants as you do about hoppers. I tie a #14 black foam ant that is my go-to fly when they ignore the hoppers. I just got back from Slough and a #14 Rainy’s Foam Hopper was The Bomb!

I’ve been pleased with my Feisol legs. I have owned them for two years now…and no complaints. They’ve just released a CF model that is listed as 1.98 lbs.
I went to Lowe’s and purchased a 4-pack of the rubber caps you slip over chair legs to keep from scratching the floor. They are black in color and I want to say I got the 1/2 inch size. They are about $2.00 a pack if I remember right. Soak them in warm water and slide them on. As they cool, they will tighten up.

How were the bears? I fished the Russian about this time last year and they were in there pretty thick. The rangers were passing out plastic garbage bags so the snaggers could put their dressed fish in them (to keep from dribbling salmon juice on the trail).
In the 5th photo….is that monofilament line littering the bottom of the stream?

I weighed the setup last night. Total weight of the “altered” tripod WITH the Manfrotto ballhead attached is 3 lbs 1 ounce.
I really was not prepared for this shoot. I had a cheap zoom lens, no polarizer and was not using the tripod. I would watch the fish through the viewfinder and start snapping as he approached the surface. I intend to try again with a better lens and tripod. My plan is this……….
I’m gonna pull the trigger on the Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 with image stabilization pretty soon. I also want to mount the setup on a tripod (with IS turned off) and aim it at the area where the fish is rising. Using a remote cable release, I will be watching the fish w/o looking through the viewfinder. I’ll shoot multiple frames and pick out the important ones.
I’m open for suggestions to improve. I really enjoy this type of photography and want to get better. I need to learn which lighting angles are best for this type of shot…ie…sun overhead, at angle behind the camera, in front? I dunno. Any of you have examples of feeding fish that you could post?
You got a deal! I think they’ve flooded Ebay with them and the price has come down considerably. I paid $70 total for mine after losing three (3) auctions in previous weeks.
The tripod is about 2 1/4 lbs and add another pound for the ballhead. I’ll try to get an exact weight tonight of the whole rig together.
The lower sections will unscrew and can be reattached later.
There are about a dozen listed now on Ebay. One closes in 3 hours and is at $11.00 right now.
Okay…here’s the scoop on the bootleg carbon fiber tripod from Ebay. I carried into the backcountry and it performed flawlessly. The only glitch was while photographing a waterfall from a particular angle….the tripod was not high enough to allow the camera to “see” over the bushes. Of course that is to be expected when you whack two leg sections off a 4 section tripod. This thing is nothing fancy but will work nicely for those backcountry excursions where weight is an issue. I had thought about whacking off the center post to save some weight….but left it in. Glad I did.
BTW….the Pelican case was worth it’s weight in gold. It was rained on, got muddy….and I slipped and fell twice, landing on the case. Camera survived. It even road down a bumpy gravel road in the back of a driftboat….bouncing all the way. No problemas.
Something I may not have mentioned, the legs will spread to three (3) locked positions if you so desire.
…and it worked just fine for waterfall photos. (Nikon D70s w/kit lens was mounted on it)
I’m not sure what the stream naming policy is ….here at The I A. Let’s just say NE corner of Yellowstone N.P. Email or PM me and I’ll get you specifics. I was sitting on a rock ledge, about 15 feet above the surface of the water. The fish was very accomodating.
