I think there are a few legitimate reasons some folks harbor ill feelings toward Orvis. Here’s one of mine……….

For years (30 or so?) The Fish Hawk in Atlanta was the premier flyshop in the Atlanta area, maybe the Southeast. I’ve been a loyal customer of theirs for almost that long. Those of you that know Gary Merriman, Sarge, Rob and some of the other stalwarts…..know that they are top notch folks. (Humorous side note…shook hands with Ted Turner in the store one morning as he was buying a Georgia license and trout stamp for Jane. He had just went into a tirade because she could not remember her SS number). Anyhow I digress….Gary sold O**** for many years and from what I hear….was once one of their biggest distributors in the country. The shop is a hard core shop. Saltwater, warmwater, coldwater….doesn’t matter….they have it all. Tying materials as well. Anyhow….O**** comes into Buckhead and throws up one of their cheesy, dogbed selling company boutiques within rock-throwing distance of The Fish Hawk.

So…one of O****’ biggest and most dedicated dealers….boinked from behind. Gary quit carrying the O**** line and continued to prosper….eventually opening a bigger and better shop even closer to the O**** company store. Call it Fly Shop smackdown. When in the ATL, if you want Bay Rum or a dog bed…head to the Company Store at Peachtree and Piedmont……fly gear=Fish Hawk. I hope the Fish Hawk wins!

Found a nice review on Midcurrent. Other than the price, I like what I see. Matt….any chance I could get a Nikon 70-200mm WITH body attached….into the pack? Your post prolly just cost me 300 bones.

I really prefer the reel in #1 to sit on it’s seat like you did in the Lamson shot….but that’s just me.

I had a ranger at Brooks Camp tell me that the “lip curl” of a grizzly is a sign that the animal is stressed. In otherwords, he/she is uncomfortable with your presence. Looks like you captured the lip curl nicely. Glad to see you emerged unscathed 🙂

I know exactly where that is……matter of fact…..I camped beneath the railroad trestle at that campground. If I remember right….the boat ramp is directly across the river. Are the big brown trout cooperative at that time?

I did build a stitch-n-glue canoe that my son uses for duck hunting…..and it works great for that. I do have concerns that a stitch-n-glue driftboat would not be as strong as a conventional framed boat. Might be wrong on that though. I’m sure stitch-n-glue advocates would object. I would prefer the traditional design if I build another.

Do you have any photos of the 13′ double-ender? I’d love to see it.

I’m going to try to make Scott’s driftboat rendezvous if he hosts it again 2009. I know PA is a long way from Arkansas…but that might be something you’d be interested in.
