Being from the ATL area, I know you are familiar with the “smash and grab” burglaries of late. Seems every morning on the local news….reporters excitedly report on another “robbery” which in actuality was a burglary.
Speaking of reporters….I saw one of the Fox 5 boneheads do a story on the TSA and airport security. He held up three “ninja stars” and referred to them as “weapons of mass destruction”.
But I digress……the Sage thief should be nabbed shortly. Hopefully sufficient restitution will be part of punishment. Kudos to the fly shop for having a decent DVR and camera system……unlike most liquor stores and banks.
Here’s my opinion and yes….everyone has one and mine stinks too 🙂
First off, the knuckleheaded reporter states, “Long and his business partner, Andrew Huber, were robbed last week.” Robbery implies that force against a person was used to obtain the item of value. No force in this scenario. The store was not “robbed”.The salesman was duped. A theft occurred and dude will most likely be charged with Theft by Taking or Theft by Shoplifting…. not Robbery. Due to the value of the rod (over $500), this crime would be a felony offense in Georgia. Sorry to pick nits….but this error in reporting is quite common…..and possibly deliberate…to create a little more drama in the story than actually exists. I hate this new breed of news reporters. But I digress.
Secondly…..I think the reward of a fishing rod was a clever ploy by the merchant. If he had simply posted a $500 cash reward….the story probably never would have made it to the evening news. And I gotta side with Tim on this one….you shouldn’t have to pay folks to do the right thing.

I have a Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR and it worked well on my last trip to AK. I chose the 70-200 VR because I could not afford (literally and figuratively) to carry a heavy tripod and gimbal for my 400mm lens….in addition to fishing gear. I plan to add a 1.7 TC for the trip this summer. Note-I am not steady enough to handhold my 400mm (non VR), even with the ISO bumped up. Weight is a huge issue when hiking in the bush and using floatplanes to get around.
With that said….I miss my 400mm when in AK but just can’t bring myself to deal with the hassle of getting all that gear on commercial aircraft and float planes. If I were going just to photograph, I’d definitely take the big stuff.
I was extremely lucky to get close enough to the action at 200mm.

Zach….I’ve lived (and fished) in Georgia most of my life and have never caught smallmouth here. I’m sure there are some around but I haven’t caught any. Of course I live in the Piedmont region and concentrate my piscatorial pursuits in that area. As a matter of fact….the only smallies I’ve caught were in the Hiwassee River near Reliance, TN.
Now shoal bass….that’s a different story.
I’m digging the teak Old School fighting chair! I immediately thought of Hemmingway and the Pilar after seeing these.

I’m partial to the “roll top” design as opposed to zippers. Easier access and just as watertight in my opinion. Here’s a good selection of roll top packs. I especially like the Aquaknot:

Just keep in mind that the S.F. is at least an hour from the flyshop so your travel time may eat into your fishing time.
Adam….I went once during teal season but my son has been quite a few times….which was the main reason for doing the project. He has taken mostly woodies with a few mallards. I think the best is yet to come with this cold nasty weather driving the migrating birds our way.
The boat really works great for a teenager with a 4-banger Toyota p/u. Thanks for asking.

I bought the B&S for two reasons…..
– 4-stroke so no need to worry about impellers and cooling
– it’s for my son….so no need to worry about gas / oil mixtures.
Oh….and on the used market they are cheap….about $400. The downsides….noisy with vibration….but it doesn’t bother me. It’s plenty of motor for that model boat IMO.
Out of curiosity, Steve, are you permitted to take some personal protection into that area, and if so, what would you bring? Zach
Zach…Even though it is a National Park it’s my understanding you can carry a firearm. One member of our party in ’06 carried a large caliber revolver….something around a .50 caliber if I remember right. Everyone else had bear spray. In 2008 I did not have bear spray. There were two ocassions on that trip where I wished I had it. Two cubs became overly curoius with our presense and followed us for a distance. They were behaving like puppies, bouncing around, nipping at each other and then bounding toward us…getting to within ten feet at times. When I say cubs, they were about 100 pounds apiece. Mom did not seem concerned. The other encounter was a 600 pound sub-adult male that came bounding across the stream as my son had just played a fish. The bear stuck his head underwater in the area where the fish had jumped which was about 30 feet a way. Both encounters were a little unnerving but in the end…provided that adrenilin rush that many of us enjoy 🙂 I’d like to carry a firearm but it is such a hassle to deal with TSA and the airlines. I’ll probably opt for pepper spray. I think the key is to carry what makes you comfortable and respect the bears.

The “fishing vs paddling” had me concerned as well until I did some research. Most of the big trout are caught while trolling. So…..I’m thinking of hanging a 7 or 8 weight off the side of the canoe…..using a 500 grain sink tip and some huge, black string leeches.

I’m pleased with my Tokina 12-24 purchased off Craigslist in nearly new condition for $400.
I just got in touch with a guy from the Minnesota Rower’s Association. He’s done it three (3) times.
After spending a week at Brooks Camp in ’08, I knew I wanted to do this. A few of the guides whetted my apetite. Below is a photo of the “Hero” board in Brooks Lodge. Notice the size of the fish coming from the Bay of Islands area. I plan to fish that area pretty hard.
The fishing is supposed to be top notch and the photographic opportunities are unlimited.
I’ll let you know how things progress.
