I think there are some real applications down here for some rods like that and I know of a few guys getting into it but it’s slow.
I’d be interested in your thoughts as you test a few out.
I’m really keen to try it.
We watch developments down here with interest but do rely a little on the net. Our exposure hands on to a lot of new techniques and gear is sort of limited because of our size of populace. In saying that, we’ve a few things that have developed down here and the aussie boys are never short of a word. 😉
My favourite picture is the one where you have shot down the length of the rod. Did you use a tripod to get the water effect around the legs? Thats a slow shutter thing?hi Zach
Is the z axis you were using a switch rod?
Were both rods 7wt? Similar in length?
For switch fishing do you need a specialized line?

ThanksYes somehow the brown bullhead catfish found its way into our waterways. I have never caught one but they are in Lake Taupo and several other North Island watersheds.
Nothing as big as what Will caught though. (I don’t think?) :-/
I think that fish is an amazing capture and I can only imagine how hard a big fella like that would go in current too!!

Absolutely spot on.
The canals produce rainbows, some browns and the odd escaped salmon for those who use bait etc and are prepared to sit it out.
the odd one does get caught on the fly and one of my friends has developed a method where he landed several pigs last year but…..its not quite the most attractive environment to fish and they do look a little obscene.
The canals can be fun in summer though, you can ride your bike or drive!! 😮 along the canals looking on the edges for rising fish and away you go. Heaps more attractive water nearby though!Just a last blast on the eels, some people would say they are nearing endangered levels in NZ through habitat loss and overfishing (sound familiar?

We had a great time, chasing rainbows and they made a change from the browns.
We have some great saltwater fly stuff too.
Arguably our premier inshore saltwater target is the Pacific yellowtail, which we call Kingfish but our bread and butter is the Kahawai (which in Maori means “strong in the water”)

Granted it’s the off season, but seeing as you live around the best trout fishery in the world (anyone feel free to debate me on this – I won’t budge), and incredible saltfly, you’ll get no pity from me. What I would do for kiwi citizenship…

Yesterday I finished “Casting A Spell” by George Black
“The bamboo flyrod and the American Pursuit of Perfection”. I thoroughly enjoyed it and if you have been tempted by bamboo then this might create an addiction.
Well researched and informative it traces the stories of many of the more famous Bamboo rodmakers in the US and perhaps the struggles they had with perfection and commercialisation.
A nice book to complement the podcast with Sante Guiliani?A great topic for the evening fire and a round of whiskey! ::)

We have several species of Cicadas here in NZ and fish them regularly every year from November to March. It great fishing and very visual. At times it will be a fish a cast in some of the Southern high country lakes as the cicadas hatch out of the tussocks and get blown into the water. Its always great to see a surface take to size 8 flies!
I think the TBD 2 give some idea of the fishing possibilites.Oh yes Poronui has just been sold too.

For the many enthusiasts of Gierach, me too! I’ve really been enjoying James Babb “Flyfishing fool” “River music” and several others. In Flyfishing fool I think he even writes about the same writer’s trip that Gierach does.
