MemberHI guys,
I been lurking for some time and love the site . I guess you can say I am a trout bum from the north east . I live in NJ :'( but consider the Catskill rivers my home waters .)
Currently I am reading Dec Hogans new book A Passion For Steel Head . I higly recomend this book for any spey or steel headers out there it is the best book I have seen on swinging flies. He realy breaks down the sport from casting to presenting the fly to the fish with easily understood sketches, there is some nice fish porn also.
A few of my other favorits are:
anything by John Gierch (Trout Bum is my favorite)
Bone Fishing by Randall Kaufman ( The only book you will ever need on the sport)
Fly Fishing Pennslyvania streams by Charles Meck ( a guide book)
The Longest Silence by Thomas McGuane
THe moon Pulled up an acre of Bass by Peter Kaminsky (striper fishing along the east coast)
On the run by David Dibendetto (more striper fishing)
Trico Fishing by Bob Miller ( a good book if you can find it especialy if you fish spring creeks in the east)
Trouble shooting the cast by Ed Jaworowski ( very helpfull title speaks for its self)
Land of Little rivers by Austin Francis ( history of flyfishing in the catskills)
In The Ring of The Rise by Vincent Marinaro ( a classic)
Fishing Limetone spring Streams by Charlie Meck ( A great guide book that points you in the right direction for finding and fishingspring creeks in the east.)I will add more to the list in the future my 18 month old son is calling for me.

First, a few great books already mentioned, in particular The Founding Fish by John McFee, and Undaunted Coourage by Ambrose
The following are all read and re-read by me, and

Member1. Casting Angles by Mac Brown is excellent. A must read for casting junkies.
2. The Nature of Flycasting by Jason Borger. An interesting approach to casting.
3. Selective Trout by Swisher and Richards.
4. Emergers, also by Swisher and Richards.
5. Flyfishing Guide to the Great Smoky Mountains by Don Kirk is great and
has a permanent spot in my backpack.
And like pretty much everyone else I enjoy reading anything by John Gierach.Great thread. Thank you guys for your suggestions.

MemberI don’t think anyone has mentioned James Prosek’s “Fly Fishing the 41st”.

MemberGreat thread!
Just finished re-reading Many Rivers to Cross by MR Montgomery. Excellent read, and a real eye-opener regarding the decline of native trout in the west.
Bunch of good ideas here. Next stop, amazon.com

MemberI’ve been meaning to post in this thread for a while, and I just finished The River Why, which I wasn’t impressed with, so now’s as good a time as any.
If you have any interest in saltfly, read Sea Level: Adventures of a Saltwater Angler by Jeffrey Cardenas. Amazon is selling it for $50, which is expensive as hell for a book (only available in hardcover), but I wouldn’t bat an eye at the cost after finding out how good it is. I can say with the exception of the short story “The Longest Silence” which gives the book its name, this is the only fly fishing writing I’ve ever really enjoyed.

MemberI enjoyed reading this thread, although I did know that it was so dated…almost a year and half!
I am currently reading “Casting a Spell” a wonky book about bamboo rods, but I am enjoying it thoroughly, being a wonk myself.
Middleton is my favorite write because of his depth of reflection.
This is my first post here and am very impressed so far.
Thanks for offering this BB.

Simon ChuMemberWonderful thread and more reasons to punish the account at Amazon 😉
For the many enthusiasts of Gierach, me too! I’ve really been enjoying James Babb “Flyfishing fool” “River music” and several others. In Flyfishing fool I think he even writes about the same writer’s trip that Gierach does.
Fishing Lessons by Quinnett was a suprise. He is the same author as the previously mentioned Pavlov’s trout
Neagly Farson “Going fishing” travel and adventure from the post 2nd world war era.
The Accidental angler by Charles Rangeley Wilson
Thanks again for some great recommendations and site

The Itinerant AnglerI’ve got to read “Fly Fishing Fool.”

Simon ChuMemberYesterday I finished “Casting A Spell” by George Black
“The bamboo flyrod and the American Pursuit of Perfection”. I thoroughly enjoyed it and if you have been tempted by bamboo then this might create an addiction.
Well researched and informative it traces the stories of many of the more famous Bamboo rodmakers in the US and perhaps the struggles they had with perfection and commercialisation.
A nice book to complement the podcast with Sante Guiliani?Jun 7, 2007 at 3:50 am #48014steve howard

MemberI will second the recommendation of Casting a Spell. It exacerbated my boo addiction.
Let me also mention a compilation that I rediscovered the other day in my library. It’s a TU book titled The Gift of Trout, edted by Leeson. It has a chapter by Middleton, Girach, Proper and the usual suspects. if you can find a copy, get it.

MemberGot to read A WISP ON THE WIND: IN SEARCH OF BULL TROUT, BAMBOO AND BEYOND by Jerry Kustich on the plane rides last week. Great insight into Bamboo and the Winston Bamboo Rod factory in Twin Bridges, MT. Jerry has worked and lived there for over 20 years. Makes you want to go out an buy a Winston.
