They are sweet looking rods and the Japanese certainly take their craftsmanship seriously, especially these cottage industry guys.
I’m sorta regressing with my rod choices in some areas but havn’t quite gone the whole hog with reels yet!? 🙂 Bet that reel will be nice on that rod though!!!
I’m thinking of making up a rod on a locally produced fiberglass blank. we can pick a colour and have them make it up. I wanted to compare the cost of making one to purchasing something as unique as what you have ordered.
The idea that it is 5pce though is really something.
Here I can only get a 2 pce blank.
What else is out there that would compare?Hi Cameron

SimonWell…I have the Renzetti traveller and its hanging in there with the cam jaws and I too considered the Dingo and Dyna King.
I’ve only heard good things about the Dingo Zach.
What I would warn you away from would be the Vosseler. It has the suction base but the hook holding design is flawed and not user friendly when production tying.

For those who were not sure. Last night Australia and NZ had a pretty decent sporting event against each other and Australia won :'(.These boats are made in NZ and I didn’t even know until Morsie had informed me.! 😕
After trying his in NZ and seeing what they are capable of I know I want one!
They are incredibly tough and because you can maneuver with your feet a very good platform from which to fish.
Peter and I fished the Waiau in Southland and perhaps got to a few places rarely fished because of the boat and how Morsie could get himself into casting positions. I was in a pontoon boat and although reasonably effective, I felt the waterstrider definitely had an edge.
If you like the idea of long drfits and perhaps overnighting Zach, give one of these things a blast. I’m hoping to get one and then overnight drift a few amazing local rivers.

Have to agree about those boats! They really are awesome and not only can they do low flows and be backpacked but they handle grade 3 rapids pretty easily too!

I saw a photo similar to that one in a fly shop in Christchurch.
Yea, basically anywhere where there is decent beech forest, (West Coast, Top of the South, Fiordland) you’ll find mousing fish. Lots of dead fish photos in NZ still unfortunately. This photo was in one of the magazines and has appeared in several articles on the mousing plague.
Did you fish any of the “secret spring creeks” around Christchurch? We’re you here in a mousing year Tim?
This image is from a fish and game article on the mice and just goes to show how many these guys can scoff. Not all the fish, where we were, keyed in on this protein furball but the ones that did were normally pretty solid.

We’ve just had a decent mousing year down in NZ. Every few years or so our native Beech trees flower and seed and the following year there is significantly more food available to the wee fellas. This in turn allows a population explosion and as the mice eat out their food sources they forage further and become vulnerable to trout. (I suppose a puddle to a mouse is the same as a lake so they just need to see whats on the other side? ::))
I’ll try and find some photos that I can stick up. The fish, when they key into this phenomenon really pack on the weight and its pretty exciting fishing. We found hooking them was also a bit hit and miss,

We went for 2 weeks and ended up being stranded on there for an extra week but thats another story! Being late home 10days from a fishing trip tested my wifes patience for sure! 😮 ;D 😉

A lot of what is on their DVDs is not online at Hook.tv but the anglers and locations are basically the same.
Actually this kind of angling is very typical of what I do most of the summer.
BTW not all our fish are big. Most people would consider a 6lber big and the doubles (10) are awesome to catch but the days you chase them you have to be prepared to miss out totally. (think large fish but not many)
Most people would catch fish averaging 3-4 lbs but a friend and I sometimes chase “dinks” just because they are good looking especially if they still have their parr spots. 🙂http://hook.tv/Profile.aspx?userId=33455

Have you ever seen any of the trophy trout series of DVDs made from down here in NZ? They highlight a lot of the rivers right where I live and you can see snippets of these DVDs online (Zach ? can I stick a link here?)
Basically just guys going fishing and documenting their days on the river but very good footage. Robbie who is the primary angler in most of the fishing sequences is a good friend of mine and we hang out a bit. Lots of big fish and most on the dry, all sight fishing.The other blokes are members of our local “flyflingers and streambashers” club. Its very quintessential Kiwi fishing I guess. Working together to find fish. wind and sometimes getting busted off. I don’t think the guys ever film a day where they get skunked but that happens too! ::)
Another series I really like is “A river somewhere”. Basically its a travel show where flyfishing around the world is the primary reason for travelling. Made by two very witty comedians, the guys go bonefishing, chase trout and visit far away places including Bhutan. Its Australian and we kiwis are use to laughing at them
