The Itinerant AnglerI am credibly informed by Weston Reynolds (aka “The Young Lefty Kreh”) that the fly is a TerraNasty.

MemberAnybody tried this pattern on the Little Red in Arkansas?
May 28, 2007 at 10:50 pm #55737anonymous
MemberBilly:
Did some checking back into my river reports. In 1998 we had a convergence year of the 13 and 17 year cicadas hatch on the White. A very rare event. We will not see another convergence in this century. I would guess that the northern Arkansas hatches would hold true for the Little Red. Some one else might know more.
Next hatch should be in 2011.

MemberI actually talked with Clark Reid – the Clark in Clark’s Cicada, about his fly, and the somewhat humorous anecdote behind his Cicada pattern is that the fly was actually tied by him while he was in the Umpqua factory (in Thailand I guess) right before his break to pursue a country music career. The fly went into full production without ever having been shown to a fish.
Clark thought his cicada pattern should come with a warning label. He genuinely believed that once a fish (at least in New Zealand) has been caught on it, it wouldn’t take the pattern again.Check out Carty’s GT – it’s a good impressionistic Cicada pattern.

The Itinerant AnglerThanks to, of all things, a Polish fly tyer’s website which linked to my photo of the Terra Nasty and then asked me what it was, I have discovered an actual recipe.

Clark just happened to be a guide given to me by Poronui Ranch when I lived in NZ.

MemberTim – I didn’t know you went to Poronui, we’ll have to swap stories about that. I spent about four months at Poronui in the fall (their spring) of 2004. Never fished with Clark though…
Sorry for the off-topic… cicada on.

Simon ChuMemberHI Tim and Ian.
I can’t believe I have just got off the phone to the 2 guys you mention and stumbled on this thread. Clark and Peter Carty!
Clark will be pleased with that photo Tim!!!
We have several species of Cicadas here in NZ and fish them regularly every year from November to March. It great fishing and very visual. At times it will be a fish a cast in some of the Southern high country lakes as the cicadas hatch out of the tussocks and get blown into the water. Its always great to see a surface take to size 8 flies!
I think the TBD 2 give some idea of the fishing possibilites.Oh yes Poronui has just been sold too.

Possibilities is the key word here.

MemberClark’s usually on the sexyloops board, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up at some point to comment here.
I’m off to Alaska in 12 days Tim, so the fishing will probably have to wait until the fall. Unfortunately we don’t have any cicadas in Alaska (to my knowledge…), so I’ll have to see if I can get back on the board during the summer and check out the cicada action.
PS Nice Fish, SI?
