Just curious … what was the final cost on that PC build?

in reply to: Nikon ONE #72946

I couldn’t resist putting my hands on one at the local Best Buy. I still don’t know where these cameras fit in, in a professional setting, but they certainly are sexy. The screen is the sharpest, brightest I have seen, and the focusing pops point to point. It’s about time manufacturers abandoned the low end (to camera phones) and concentrate on the middle and upper end.

This system is the first new system that’s tempted me in awhile. The lenses aren’t all that fast, but how much does that really matter on this level?

Now, just come out with a waterproof version, and it’s all over. Time to read up on this system.

    — they make an f mount adapter for it – full functionality according to Galbraith article

    +1 for Dyna-King Barracuda. I love mine.

Looking … looking … looking … no largemouth bass … no fingerbitinghybrids? Guess I’m thinking south not southern? No matter though … what do they pay for ms/photography? We could bring them some Chicken Fried Nation southern Fly Fishing Culture on the Skids – halloween hybrids included!

Texas Report – Drought. More drought. La Nina. More La Nina. One year going on two.
Red tide on the Texas Gulf Coast.
    Fish kills.
Blue-green algae on Lake Texoma. Rivers dry.

I’m always afraid to add something to my cart … I might actually go through with it! So I wonder how one would get on a list of “preferred online sellers?” And I wonder if my local fly shop is preferred?

in reply to: SUP Review #49525

I’m a pro angler for Diablo (made right here in Texas), and the same exact size as Matt. I use the Adios which is 12.5 feet long and 36 inches wide. They’re wide enough to be a hand full, but the only way to get soaked on one of these is to fall off, not roll it over. I regularly fly fish it in 360 degrees, and although it does have a “sweet spot,” you can still move about the deck pretty amazingly. Paddles, for SUP’s can be expensive. I am looking to pole though, and a Stiffy can cost less than a good SUP paddle. It’s a great world.

So does this mean they don’t let media in? I have been trying for months to get a pass, and had zero ZERO response. I was tentatively planning on a gathering of bloggers / reporters / journalists at the location (Bourbon Street) as well. I just have to see this dinosaur before it becomes extinct!

in reply to: Anybody out there try a GoPro? #49222

We used four of them on a pilot we were working on a few months back on the Guadalupe River in Texas. They are fantastic. The accessories are where you will be spending more money – for example the screen for the back. They definitely have that “wow” factor, and I was talking to a couple of production assistants that work here in Las Colinas, Texas, and they said they use them on reality shows, and there are now specialists on sets that only manage all the GoPro cameras. That said, there’s always something better right around the corner isn’t there?

in reply to: Fish Taxidermy #49171

    Wow! Taxidermy fail.

I did a story on these guys east of Dallas for Lone Star Outdoor News awhile back, what I see that makes all the difference is the quality of the actual painting. Here’s part one of a two parter – http://texasflycaster.com/the-black-knight-taxidermist-pushes-the-medium-to-another-level/ . I find the entire process fascinating. I just checked the link to their site, and apparently they’ve lost that one.

Very old indeed. I am selling aggressively based on the economic principal sell high and buy low. Pretty straight forward economics.

in reply to: Korkers Chrome Soles #47476

Actually, they should replace any defects like studs coming off and polluting our waters.

in reply to: Simms Vibram Streamtread Opinions #47109

OK, so we’re all studs now. How about someone solve the stud problem when we want to be in our, or someone else’s, kayak or hard surfaced boat? Can you imagine those wonderful Simms star cleats all over my Native Ultimate floor next month in Arkansas? The horror.
I am seriously considering wearing a pair of boots, and carrying the studded – changing as the situation demands.

Looks like a few of us are looking to move up from the D300?

in reply to: Omnitrax – Korkers Wading Boots? #46850

I just love the term “upgrade” being used in footwear. It’s so … futuristic … computer-ish. What happened to getting it right the first time? This is the third iteration of their “system,” and no one wonders why? Fascinating.

When a company with footwear meant to be submerged in water tells you to “presoak the boots before wearing,” and, “stuff the toe box with plastic grocery bags after you get out of the water,” you know something is wrong, and you know you have been used in place of research-and-development. That was my experience with Korkers Version 2.0.

    That said, I did like them for walking, and liked the carbide tipped soles for hopping granite jetties (even if a few tips did quickly disappear). Unfortunately, the toe boxes continued to shrink until I had to give them away to a smaller footed newbie. So, my long term review (sure would like to read more LONG TERM reviews) goes like this;
    Price – Reasonable
    Comfort – Poor
    Durability – Poor
    Versatility – Very Good
    Fit – Good then Bad
    Soles – Lost Only One
Perhaps Korkers 3.0 are the real deal. I may be old school, and I do wear Red Wing boots, but changing something as functional as wading boots seems a bit … “by design” in my opinion. You seen a Red Wing lately? Same old same old.

in reply to: Boxed In – No More Upgrading for Me #71845

You know the horse “Little Blackie” in “True Grit” … well that’s how it’s going to end for both of my G5 Dual towers.

in reply to: Boxed In – No More Upgrading for Me #71841

Guess I will just have to toss my 3-thousand dollar (2005 when a dollar was a … you know) G5 Dual 2.5 in the landfill.

There’s plenty of room for new e-zines that pay don’t we think? Imagine an online magazine that pays – what a novelty.
I tell you another thing that I can’t remember being mentioned; magazine and annuals that charge for entries to contests – charge to the point of being profitable, and the entire focus of their existence. Communication Arts, for one, comes to mind.

in reply to: Flats Skiffs #46719

That last point is gold. In a 4-dollar a gallon world, which we will go through again someday, I can’t even afford to drive my Land Cruiser, much less pull anything with it. Great point Dan H.
