No salts here? What about the Keys? Hate to throw a wrench in the works. texasflycaster

No trust fund. Actually closer to living in my 25-year-old Land Cruiser down by the river. A loving wife keeps me from being a homeless photographer — that is a photographer who is homeless. texasflycaster

in reply to: Nikon medium format ? #65465

An interesting proposition. It’s difficult to see the purpose though. A full frame DSLR (Nikon) offers near?actual? medium format resolution. Canon’s lineup basically knocks off a lot of medium format digital backs with their high end DSLR’s. It wouldn’t be too surprising for Nikon (now cash flush) to head down a few new streets. Some of them, like this one, could be dead-ends though. As per lenses, I’m no engineer,

I get the MAC v. PC question all the time, and you really have it right – carefree. However, that’s not just an image thing. I describe MACs as being for the person who “just wants to punch a button, and have it go.” I’ve heard PCs described as being for the person who also wants to wear a tool belt. Price is outrageous, but my two G5 towers and one MacBook Pro are still rocking along after three years. How many lives in PC world is that? texasflycaster

Lauren – You can pretty much count on having to ship film to have it developed with that word “well” attached. BWC here in Dallas, Tx., uses dip-and-dunk machines to process film and could be worth a look. They are essentially the last best pro lab left standing after the “revolution”.

I spent years printing all day, every day, for one photographer in Dallas, and finally got out on my own (a long time ago) and was still printing my own in my own home darkroom until the “revolution”.

Now, I have to agree with another’s post there really is nothing like a Silver Gelatin print, but there are other prints / papers / methods that I find appealing. Specifically, I use Hahnenemuhle – German Etching for texture, and have gone crazy for their Fine Art Pearl (285gsm.), which is as close to air dried fibre as I have found so far.

Ahh, but I do miss the darkroom and the coldlight glow.

    Mr. Blevins,
You were thinking of an M3? Have you tried or thought about the (aforementioned) Hasselbad X-Pan? I love mine and it is a true panoramic. I haven’t shot it in a very long time, but it is safe to say I will still have it once film ceases to exist. It is the only camera that (in panoramic mode) sees the way I believe I see with no camera in front of my face. The optics may be Japanese, but they are darn good. It really is all about the glass anyway. texasflycaster

What a wonderfully refreshing thread! So deep I’m wondering if anyone mentioned “Fly Fishing Through the Midlife Crisis” by Howell Raines?
