MemberRich, I read The Longest Silence in early spring of this year. I’d never read any McGuane before and at first his writing style blew me away. However as the book went on, I think it got a little too dense. Almost like that huge stack of pancakes that looks great when you first get it but by the time your done its been a bit too much. But it is a great book.
I’m wrapping up The River Why right now. I’m not sure why I hadn’t read this book before, because its been on my radar for a long time. I’ve really enjoyed it. I really like all the different perspectives and techniques of fishing he covers in there. Its been a fun read…

MemberMcGuane can be heavy and best read in small doses.

MemberI recently picked up signed copies of two books by Gary Borger, Naturals and Nymphing as well as a Gary Lafontaine book called Caddisflies. It was like attack of the Garys!!!
All three are totally jammed packed with useful and not so useful but interesting info, a bit older titles, but hey, wisdom ain’t new!
Is that Ed Engle book the one about his summer jobs with the forest service?

MemberDave that is a good book on Bees I think my uncle has a copy of that and I perused it last time I was up there. He a nice little farm and used to keep bees. Its a classic. I remember my grandma driving a full hive of bees up from Texas (to Ohio) in the back of her old Ford Escort for him, full of bees in the middle of july. She didn’t get stung once!
Since we just moved back to the pseudo country life, from big city livin I’ve been thinking about getting a bee hive for next year’s garden. I’m not sure if they help a vegetable garden or not but I don’t think they can hurt.
Do you keep bee’s?

MemberEthan,
I do indeed keep bees.

MemberEthan, if you haven’t read it already, “Following the bloom” by Douglas Whynott is a wonderful read about beekeepers who rent their hives out for pollinating agricultural crops across the country.

MemberGary, is that a Novel or non-fiction? It sounds interesting either way, but more interesting if it has some story to it.

MemberActually my suggestion was for Dave too, given that he’s a bee keeper.

Yep. I haven’t dug into it yet, but it is on the top of the stack for a trip I am taking in a couple of weeks. I read the first couple of pages and am salivating.
Finally got some time to sit down and finish this one.

MemberWhat a wonderfully refreshing thread! So deep I’m wondering if anyone mentioned “Fly Fishing Through the Midlife Crisis” by Howell Raines?

MemberI have been rereading James Prosek lately. Am I his only fan aside from Nick Lyons? I see so few people mention him.

MemberJason, I like Prosek’s writing and art. I’ve only read Fly Fishing the 41st but I own his trout of the world book too which is heavier on the art side of things. I’ve read what he writes for NYTimes when I can spot it. I think the last piece I read of his was on South America?
I saw somewhere that Zach is doing a podcast interview with him soon and I’m looking forward to hearing that interview.

MemberI was introduced to Prosek one early morning while thumbing through the channels. I landed on ESPN 2 and watched “The Complete Angler”, I have only been more jealous once in my life, and that was watching my best friend kiss the first girl I had a crush on. My daughter takes her copy of A Good Day’s Fishing to school for show and tell, sometimes she likes to take Trout of the World too. Great writing even better art.
