It’s logical that on a national board, most of the ideas of flats boats are of a “Florida strain.” There are, however, a number of regional flats boat makers along the Texas Gulf Coast. The one I am most familiar with is Dargel in Donna, Texas. I don’t know that there are any skiff makers in Texas, and a “Texas flats boat,” in general – isn’t nearly as sexy as a Florida boat. http://www.dargel.com/
I think the most important things in a good flats boat are –
    – quality of workmanship / materials
    – weight
    – draft
    – versatility – cut the chop and get shallow

Great if you’re running on an Intel multi-cores Mac, but can upgrade no further with my G5 Duals. No one seems to fault Apple for abandoning their own machines. It almost seems expected.

You’re talking my home water (now far away). Really, I would look at Venice, Louisiana. I don’t know how far this cold is going to reach though – maybe to Louisiana?

GSI Outdoors H2jO – http://www.rei.com/product/750397 . That’s what I use, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for a container to boil water with. Coarse grind you beans though.

We (here in Tejas) definitely lean toward saltwater rods as Grant indicates. We’re so close to both salt and fresh, it just makes perfect sense.

I would offer up for consideration that a boga flopping fish is less likely to be “injured” than one held firmly any other way. The boga design allows them to flop freely whilst being held at one pressure point. I have been slapped in the face plenty of times by a boga-ed fish.

I always enjoy the direction boga and scale discussions turn to “sloshing guts,” and “feeling pain.” You just hooked something by the mouth (hopefully), dragged it kicking and screaming backwards from its environment into an environment where it cannot breathe … If we’re really worried that much, best not to catch the fish in the first place?

All you have to do is recall the inverse square principle of light in order to get to black.

    Now THAT’s a good question.

Ok, I want a Montana trout plate please. I am a Land Cruiser guy, so please don’t take it off a Rubicon.

in reply to: The internet’s impact on flyfishing? #45227

Taking just one part of this – hotspotting … The same guys that complain about it on my site are dying to read something about a spot they’ve heard rumors about. The basic complaint, “You can hotspot. Just don’t hotspot my spot?”
Also, around here, we are typically dealing with large surface areas around lakes, so google earth and having an iPhone with Navionics / GPS and google earth gets us on spots long hidden.

in reply to: Fracked Trout Habitat #45271

Well, we had an earthquake centered in Oklahoma today, and I felt it here (in North Texas) sitting at my laptop this morning. Apparently, initial reports are this was not a seismic event. We’re on the Barnett Shale here, and some agency is citing drilling / fracking as the cause.

A little more research would reveal – there’s hardly any desert in West Texas.

in reply to: Winston Teams with Cabelas – Seriously?!?! #45372

So, it’s time to sue for anti-competitive practices? You mean rod makers are anti-competitive? As Gomer Pyle would say, “Surprise. Surprise. Surprise!” Unless multiple plaintiffs join in this one, that courageous first plaintiff will be hung out to dry. Zach, you’re the attorney. I would love to see you make the case against these guys (right here) for we the less lawyerly.
Matt, I stopped in the Cabela’s last week and saw the spanking new display on their floor – tweeted it on my site, and from what I saw, they aren’t carrying the entire Winston line, but a couple of lower end rods made overseas – not in the good old USA.
This all misses the point though – I come to Tailwaters for friendly service and KNOWLEDGE. All retailers are not created equal when it comes to knowledge, the latest gear and an “edge” when it comes to latest techniques. Otherwise, in this economy, we’re all misers when it comes to gear.

Heck, if Tailwaters really is upset with Winston, write them an open letter, and let’s see what they say! I say it’s much ado about nothing.

Ford. Didn’t take the bailout. I have a friend who has purchased three different models this year.

in reply to: Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX #9347

I love my Garmin 60CSx! Can’t say enough about how good it is and how well it works. Hate to bring such bad news, but Cabela’s has it on their new flier for 219.90. I hate when that happens!

“Zipping My Fly” by Rich Tosches – Just about the time you think he’s going to rattle off a page without a joke, BAM, another joke. I was glad to finish that and start on “Inventing Montana” by Ted Leeson.

in reply to: Estes Park/RMNP September Fishing? #44545

I was there a few weeks ago, and the only thing I can add is HECK OF A CROWD! September probably makes a world of sense as the kids get back to school. I haven’t done any National Parks, so I was a bit … stunned. I opted out and for the St. Vrain.

I am pretty sure we can be more help with the fishing than the job search! Double-dip anybody?

in reply to: iPad – a worthy photographer’s tool? #71120

It’s always fun to see folks wanting some new technology to do what it is clearly not meant for. I seriously doubt they will ever give an iPad the power of a laptop to process, edit or organize volume images. That’s what makes it a gadget, albeit powerful gadget. As for showing a folio on an iPad, that would almost extricate the iPad from gadgetdom in my opinion. I think iPads are meant to be the new book / newspaper for the foreseeable future. I do a lot of photography for a university here in town, and we pretty much agree that all the images I’ve done for them that include students with books, will be obsolete in five (I say two) years. Textbook publishers at all levels, are looking at their huge profits about to become, what Obama would call, obscene profits. (BUY stock in textbook publishers.)

I sit and read, and surf on my laptop while watching TV all the time, and now I’ll do it on a simplified device – the iPad. Makes sense to me. It’s certainly difficult to get PC people to switch though, when they can just wait three years for the Microshaft version of today’s Mac OS. No offense intended.

Lane knows what he’s talking about, BUT, you’re gonna’ need a boat.
