I am in the market for a new camera body, and am really struggling with what to buy.  I have been shooting with a D40 for the past three years, and feel like it is time to step up a notch or two.  I shoot in either full manual or aperture priority for >99% of the time, so I am comfortable with manual controls.  My primary reasons for getting an upgrade are that the D40 CCD sensor was lacking in low light performance, and I need a few more megapixels in order to create 8.5″ x 11″ prints at 300 dpi.  The latter I was informed of by one editor that his publication required.

Personally, I don’t want to spend a whole lot of money, and have been looking at buying something used.  I did have my list narrowed down to either a refurbished D90 or used D200.  However, after taking a trip down to the local photo store today they were really pushing the new D7000 or maybe even a used D300.  So, I guess my question to you out there who have probably taken your turns with these cameras, which would you purchase?  Keep in mind that I am looking at around $600 for the D90/D200, $950 for the D300, and $1200 for a D7000.

I wish I could help you but I don’t know much about either camera.

Here is a review of the D7000 with comments as to how it compares to D300s.

    Hi

I can’t really comment on the d300 or d7000 but have used the d200 for sometime and still do.

    Cons-

Great camera but I have never used it above iso 250 as the noise is a bit more than I am willing to tolerate.

The AF system is a bit primitive and slow ,

Looks like a few of us are looking to move up from the D300?
