MemberI am also in the market for a sleeping bag. Being a bigger guy (6’2″ 250lbs), I have always had problems with mummy type bags. Need more room. The BA Lone Star looks like it might be a good option. Any other recommendations on bags for those of us on the larger end of the spectrum?

MemberJust spoke with a buddy who guides on the Pan a few days ago and he told me the dry fly fishing is steady throughout the day. There are still some green drakes coming off if you hit it right. I would suggest you contact Frying Pan Anglers and ask for either Mike Calcaterra or Dan Cone. Both are great guys and will steer you in the right direction. Enjoy your trip. It is a great river!

He makes custom lanyards and does a great job. He has several different styles to choose from and will customize them however you like. He will build it and send you a photo of the lanyard to approve before you ever buy. I was looking for a lanyard for my trip to Colorado earlier this summer and he turned it around for me in a couple of days. I have been very impressed and the price is good. The one he made for me is the UT Southwestern model.

MemberI had heard of Jim Harrison, but did not know much about him prior to seeing the show. I am now interested in reading some of his work. Any recommendations on a good introduction to reading Harrison?

MemberI have both Konics & a Guru. They are both great reels and I feel they are a great value. Figure out which one balances best with the rod you will be using it with. I have found that the Konics balance best with my rods (Winston BIIX) rather than the lighter Guru.

MemberAre Garmin units now compatible with Macs? I haven’t checked in awhile, but one of the reasons I have held off on a GPS is the lack of software compatibility with Apple. I only have Macs now so it is a big deal for me that the software be Mac compatible. If not Garmin, what would someone recommend as far as a trail unit that is Mac compatible?

MemberJoel, also let me know when you get them in. If I am going to go that route I would prefer to help out a fellow IAer.

MemberZach –
I understand that and it makes total sense. However, that is not the case hear. The new subscription was done approximately 3 weeks prior to the current issue reaching the stands. If they are waiting until the next issue, I am totally ok with that. They have led me to believe that my first issue will be the issue that is currently on the stands and has been since the beginning of July.

MemberCheck in with Doc Thompson at High Country Anglers (http://www.flyfishnewmexico.com). There is not a better resource on the Cimarron and the area of Northern New Mexico fly fishing. There is a podcast on Fly Fish Radio where they interview Doc Thompson about the Cimarron. I think it was done back in May or June of “06. Might want to check that out as well.

MemberHey Scott. Congrats on getting to spend more time out on the water. For me, I would go with a 4wt. I fish my 4wts much more than all of my other rods, by far. I have a 4wt Winston BIIX and it is absolutely a wonderful rod. I also have a 4wt Scott A@ and it is a great little rod as well. It was my go to rod until I got the Winston. I have a 5wt and 6wt as well, but find myself going to the 4wt unless I am throwing flies too big for the 4wt. I recently spent a month in Colorado on the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork Rivers and thought I would use my 5wt or 6wt most of the time. However, I ended up using the 4wt at least 90% of the time. Also, I am now a huge Winston fan. Once I cast the BIIX I knew I had found the rod for me.

MemberI have looked at the offerings of rodmounts.com and like them. However, the vehicles I have both have DVD players in them (kids ages 5 & 3). The rodmounts look like they are centered mounted and would not work with a DVD system. Is that correct or can they be mounted around the DVD?

MemberThanks for the thoughts so far. I need to clarify something. I have a Waterdance and like and will use it or my Orvis Sling pack a vast majority of the time. I am looking for a backpack I can use for day long hikes for when I am in Colorado for a month this summer. I want something with a hydration bladder and to be able to carry camera and extra clothes and needed gear. This will not be my everyday pack to use. I agree that here in Texas it would be overkil and way too hot for everyday use. I will check out the William Joseph. It looks interesting.

MemberI would definitely consider making the drive over to Glenwood Springs and/or Basalt and float the Roaring Fork or Colorado and wade the Frying Pan. It shouldn’t be as crowded that time of year and the weather should be fine. Also, you will be in the middle of some of the most beautiful country in the state. This area allows you your choice between three of the best rivers in the entire state. You can get on all three in the time you will be there. Which ever way you go, enjoy and have a great time!

MemberThose are some amazing photos. I am envious every time I look at one of these threads. Envious of both the amazing photography and the fact that you guys get to regularly fish in those amazing spots. I am also with Zach about the Taco Bus calling my name.

MemberI have been looking at waist high options for awhile now and as I mentioned in a reply earlier in this thread I was interested in what others had to say about the options currently available. After much back and forth and much research here and on other sites, I decided to go with Orvis Tailwater XTs. There are a couple of reasons for my decision. Orvis currently has the Tailwater XTs on sale for a good discount and they are also including a free pair of their Ultralight felt sole wading boots with a purchase of the waders. With the sale on these waders I figured it was worth a trip to my local Orvis store (only 20 minutes from my house) to check out the waders. The waders are exactly what I was looking for. Even though the waders qualify as chest highs, they convert into excellent waist highs without the added bulk that results when you roll down most chest highs. Actually I think these waders are more like waist highs that happen to convert into chest highs. You just take off the detachable suspenders and the upper folds down neatly inside the waist of the waders. When I tried them on I didn’t even notice the upper was there. I paln on using them as waist highs the vast majority of the time, but wanted chest high capability in case I needed it. With these waders I feel like I got the best of both worlds in that respect. Also, I like the colors and looks of the waders better than the Simms waist highs. I had $50 in Orvis gift cards, so with the sale I was able to get out with only a little over $200 out-of-pocket for a new set of waders and a backup pair of wading boots. I am somewhat concerned that they are not Gore-Tex, but at the price I just couldn’t pass them up. I get to spend the month of July in Basalt, CO on the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork and it is the main reason I was in the market for a new pair of waders. That month should give me a good chance to really put them through their paces. I will report back on how they work out.
