MemberI am looking at getting one of the Fishpond backpack/chestpack combos. I really like the looks and volume of the Shooting Star backpack. However, the chestpack on that thing is just huge and I know I would never use it. I like the Double Haul as well, but the backpack is not nearly as big, but the chestpack is a much more manageable size. Not sure I would wear the chestpack on this one either, but it is more likely I would wear it than the one with the Shooting Star. Are the chestpacks from the two combos interchangeable? In other words, can I use the chestpack from the Double Haul with the Shooting Star instead? If they are interchangeable, how does one go about getting the Double Haul chestpack and the Shooting Star backpack without having to buy both combos?

MemberShane,
I was in the same boat not long ago. I went and bought one of Fishpond’s backpacks, and it was great. However, I soon realized it caused me to carry more gear than I needed, plus it got to be quite heavy. Whether I was on local lakes, or up at Broken Bow, I was only wearing from hole to hole, dropping it to fish. Also, and especially around here, that pack made me hot.I settled on a Fishpond Waterdance, and love the pack.

MemberShane, those chest pack-backpack combos make most feel like they’ve got a monkey around their neck all day. That and you should have a camera in that spot, ready to go. I’ve tried many over the years and the best I’ve found for comfort and function, fishing AND photo, is the Willy J “Exodus”.
Great suspension system, hydration ready, 3100ci of space (plenty, believe me), water resistant, and a great (removable) pocket/vest design that holds lots of fishing and photo whatnots. Plus, it zips up in front to holster your camera and keep it from swinging around when you’re casting or releasing your prize. Perfect! Not to mention it comes in more masculine colors than some other brands.

MemberThanks for the thoughts so far. I need to clarify something. I have a Waterdance and like and will use it or my Orvis Sling pack a vast majority of the time. I am looking for a backpack I can use for day long hikes for when I am in Colorado for a month this summer. I want something with a hydration bladder and to be able to carry camera and extra clothes and needed gear. This will not be my everyday pack to use. I agree that here in Texas it would be overkil and way too hot for everyday use. I will check out the William Joseph. It looks interesting.
