Just finished The Alaska Chronicles by Miles Nolte. It is the book form of the postings he did on the Drake forum during the summer of 2007 about his guiding at an Alaskan lodge. Very entertaining read and good insight into what the life of a guide is truly like. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a quick and easy read.
I has a different experience with a fly shop when I first started out and was looking for my first rod & reel. I went into Tailwaters Fly Shop in Dallas. They carry mostly high end stuff like Winston, Scott and Sage. I started talking to one of the guys and told him I was a newbie starting out and was looking for my first outfit. He told me to buy a TFO Pro and similarly priced reel. He really tried to get me into an affordable starter outfit and he had a lot of higher end stuff he could have pushed toward me. I really appreciated the fact that he didn’t try to sell me only higher end stuff. As a result, I have become a loyal customer and have spent a good deal of money there on higher end stuff as I have progressed.
John Micheal, I like the shots. You have some good stuff there. I especially like #1 and the perspective. I also like #2 in the reply further down the thread. Reminds me of the Leland logo. Were those taken on the Guadalupe? Sure looks like familiar water to me. Pretty close to Potts?
Steve, no offense taken by your original post. I wanted honest answers and I got them. When I purchased the original boots with studs it was just not a scenario I ever thought about or even thought to ask about. I was thinking I would only be wading. The guide was gracious to me and I was extremely careful while in and around his raft. It was a distraction for me as I did not in any way want to damage his boat. Now that I know about this, I went out and bought myself a pair of Patagonia Riverwalker Sticky Rubbers at Tailwaters Fly Shop today. The guy I dealt with there is a former guide and he told me the same thing everyone else has told. Problem solved and hopefully I won’t be a pain in the arse anymore. At least as far as my footwear is concerned.
I agree. Tailwaters has quickly become my favorite/go to fly shop in the DFW area. They have a great selection of gear and accessory items. They are also some of the nicest guys to deal with. I was a little intimidated the first couple of times I went in there since I was new and didn’t know much about anything fly related. They have been very helpful and now call me by name every time I walk into the shop. On a couple of occassions I have just called them up on the phone and they had what I wanted ready for me when either my wife or I showed up at the shop. Great customer service.

I too have a Waterdance and it seems to work just fine for now. One interesting feature has to do with the “zip-down” fly bench. I don’t actually like or use it as a fly bench. It is attached by velcro and can be removed. If you remove it you can put little velcro tabbies on things like Gink bottles and then you have a “zip-down” compartment where you have small stuff secure and at your disposal. You don’t have to fumble around in the bottom of the pack looking for small items. A guy at a local fly shop showed me that and it has been a great little benefit to the pack.

Does anyone know when the new Cloudveil Hellroaring waist highs are coming out? They are not even listed on Cloudveil’s website. Zach, maybe you can chime in on this. I like the looks on them. I really like having the suspenders as opposed to those without. Also thought you might be able to find the discontinued ones for a song, but haven’t seen that to be the case either.
Aaron, how do you like the Power Drifter? I have never seen that one before. It looks interesting. Seems like the floor is inflatable as well. Is that correct? Can you stand in it?
Actually Fly Fishing Profiles is another one that I came across that is set to record on my DVR. Just watched the latest episode of Familiar Waters and I have to say this is my favorite fly fishing show right now. By far.
My top 2 shows that are set on my DVR are Familiar Waters and Trout Unlimited On The Rise. I have also watched a couple of episodes of Legends of Rod & Reel and it is pretty good as well.
I recently got one of the Orvis Sling Packs and I love it. It is perfect for my time at the pond. It keeps things out of the way until needed. I am thinking of
I just picked up one of the BBS IIs for use with my 3wt TFO Finesse. Got a 4wt line on the extra spool. This little reel balances with the rod perfectly. I decided to go with the BBS over the MA based on weight alone as I wanted something light. Got the chance to try it out yesterday and it worked just as I wanted. I think it was a great deal.
