When you started fly fishing, where did you want to go most?  There’s a reason for that.

    Zach

I am fairly sure, that if you think about that last statement, you would agree that when you 1st started fly fishing there was a bit of ignorance inherit in some of the opinions you held.

BTW, Zach the state I go to 3 times each year for week long trout fishing is not on your list.

    Roy

PS Time to start packing the bags, Hennys should be on the water soon!!

Wyoming should not be on that list. There are many other states with much better fishing.

Who else agrees with Mark that Yellowstone NP does not have noteworthy fishing?

That retailer, I believe, was doing the same thing with high end watches in the past.

Maybe folks could consider sending a donation to the significant number of people  there who are in dire need of help versus fretting over the price and availablity of gear.

    Will

I am not aware of anyone here that is not capable of doing both at the same time. ::)

Prices have already gone back up on several of Nikon bodies and glass.  The D700, D300s, 70-200 2.8 VRII, etc. all went up in price on B&H, Adorama and Amazon.

Gone up some yes, but all of your examples are at or below MSRP. The situation is driving the discounts out of the market for sure.

Wow, B&H just went out-of-stock on the 85mm f1.4!  I have been eye-balling that lens for some time and just last week they had plenty in stock.  Who knows, maybe a fluke, but I think not.

B&H being arguably the largest Nikon retailer on the east coast, has been selling out of the 85/1.4G within a couple of days of each shipment. There are plenty around just look at some smaller shops.

I have read news reports indicating…Nikon has earthquake damage at it’s plant in Sendai, Japan that makes the high end pro bodies (D3s, D3X, D700 included) and also has lost production at the factory that makes the high end lenses which carry the “Made in Japan” on the label.  These would include all of the Gold Ring lenses, such as 24/1.4, 35/1.4, 85/1.4, 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8, and the Super telephotos. Company news release stated that while there were some employees injured by the quake, there were no loss of life among employees.  The Sendai plant had tidal-wave water within a short walking distance of the plant.  Losses to family of employees has not been commented on by Nikon, to my knowledge.

ERRR– The D7000 does not have a magnesium body.  Nikon is very clear in the D7000 press release that the body only has magnesium in the back and top.  The rest of the body is plastic.  One of my main concerns with this is that the lens mount is attached to the plastic, just as with the D90.  While we have some very good plastics today, I have a concern about hanging a lens, possibly a heavy lens, off of that mount when there are only four little screws holding the mount on.

    From Nikon’s Press:

“…The compact design is lightweight enough for a full days use, but has a reassuring heft that hints at Nikon’s reputation for reliability. The durable camera body consists of a magnesium-alloy top and rear covers…”

D400 also offers a smaller physical build with pro-grade weathersealing.  I am not hauling around a flagship body ever.  Too much backpacking.  I wasn’t even wild about the size of the D700; that thing is pretty huge, too.

Incidentally I saw a used D700 body on Amazon for $1000.  That’s pretty much a steal.

    Zach

Zach, there is a lot of talk that Nikon might move the D400 to a pro body.  Many pros apparently are pushing for one.  If so, high resolution non vertical grip bodies will be the D7000 and the D700 replacement.

    Time will tell.

I’m in the same boat as Zach – using a D200 and looking at upgrading and less than tempted by the D300.

As a pretty much macro/photomicrography user I am interested if Nikon has stepped up to the plate with the proposed D400 and  taken a page fom Canon with their implementation of live view and mirror lockup .

    Will

How is Canon’s version of live view and mirror lock up different than what is in the D300s?

Nikon’s oldest, in production, bodies are the D700 (7/1/2008), D3X (12/1/2008), D300S (7/3/2009) and D3S (11/2009). If Nikon maintains the two year cycle on replacing bodies, we should see, at least, a D800 FX body and a D400 DX body this year.  I am not sure of the benefit of many more MP.  The D7000’s 16MP is acknowledged to have diffraction problems above f8.

The current D700 is a D3 sensor in a near D300 body. If Nikon puts a D3S type sensor in the D800 are you sure you will want a $2,000 D400 vs the $3,000 D800?

How many days are left to increase to the snowpack?

Travis if you want a reasonably accurate test you must have a high contrast target that is vertical at the focus line. The sloping scale just provides to many focus issues to be reliable at the distances necessary for the focal length being tested.

Not wanting auto focus will be an issue.  None of the Point & Shoot cameras, I am aware of, have this option.  Therefore, you are looking at a DSLR which will have the option of turning auto focus off.  An excellent entry level DSLR is the Nikon D3100.  http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25472/D3100.html

You will have all of the auto options of your old camera, but also may turn most of them off and do much of the work yourself.
