But wasn’t Lightroom just on sale for $99 a few months ago.

If I am unsure of the exposure, I will sometimes fire off a bracketing burst and review those histograms before starting to take pictures.

With the D7000, a consumer body, already at 16MP it is a pretty sure bet that the D400 will be no lower in MP.  I would not bet to much on a NEAR pro level video auto focus solution in that it would be wasted on a body that does not have a constant t stop lens available for it.  Great video will require a video lens and that means big bucks.  The D7000 is a stop better in low light as compared to the D300s.  I would not be surprised to see its replacement being another stop better than the D7000.  Something at the current D700 capabilities for ISO performance would be nice.

But time will tell and we may know what the specs are in about 10 days, if some of the rumors are accurate. Just start putting those pennies away in savings because the D400 maybe as high as $2,000.

This is just some of that Free Market Capitalism, by low sell high thing.  For the price of one bottle of dry shake I can purchase 250 times the contents directly from the manufacturer.  If you identify and eliminate the middle man profit from most any goods they will be a lot cheaper. But be prepared to buy in quantity, sometimes a truck load.

Camera?  Screw that, get a lens with more reach!

Since I will be in YNP the 1st of August, I will follow your advice and bring my 500mm f4 and my 1.4,1.7 and 2.0 TCs.

If the truth were known, I suspect a camera played a role in this death.

My personal solution was to get a Nikon D3000, about $300 used, and a 35/1.8 and a 50/1.8 lenses.

For the use you describe …

I shoot alot as a guide, give presentations and write 5-10 pieces a yr plus have 3 daughters very active in sports.

I would recommend the Nikon 24-120 f4 lens.  It will cover all of those closeup shots associate with your guide activities and the kids pictures, except for the sports part. As for the sports, if its is softball, soccer or similar daytime outdoor activity the Nikon 300mm AF-S f4 should have both the reach and speed you will need.  If it is an inside sport, such as basketball, a 85mm f1.8 D would have the range and speed.

Roy, how was the trip?  Hope it went well and the water was good for you.  I’m heading up there next week to huck streamers.  I’ll be on the PM and Upper Manistee most likely, but might venture over to the Ausable if the reports are looking good.

Trip was good, as usual, but the water was up.  The day before I arrived the Main was not fishable and the south never did drop down to where even a boat could be used.  Several trees were down across the south and the last day I was there a couple of guides were floating it with saws to cut opening for the river boats.  The guys that use drifters on those rivers need to rethink somethings.

All of that said, the hennys were doing their thing every afternoon.  From 2-5 each day we had plenty of rising fish.  Streamer fishing was slow even with the higher off color water.  Seems the bright cloudless skies trumps high water.  Streamers were good for 10-12 fish but nothing of any real size.

I will be back on the Au Sable in three more weeks.  It will be time for the Brown Drakes and that will bring up all of the big fish.

Enjoy it Roy – that’s God’s country for sure.

Are you aware of the new regs for this year?  Some rivers/sections of rivers, opened up a month early.  Made for some epic April streamer days – so I’ve heard.

Yes, I was aware of the new regs.  I understand that there were many people wanting to fish the Trophy water early.  Seen many pics of big browns caught on streamers already.

But its Hendrickson time again!  Bugs should be perfect all of next week! As I always say, if you can not be good, be lucky.

There is no such thing as a healthy viable fishery, which is unprotected, that lies within easy driving distance of 5 or 6 million people.  IE. we are fully capable of loving any fishery to death.

But political facts will come into play within the states.  Georgia for example, will not permit slot limits, reduced catches and the like.  The State General Assembly is just against these things.  Rural South Georgia political influences being what they are.  By the time a case could be made to get the politicians aboard, the stream damage will have long ago been done.

I think a better solution is to require the dam operators to pay for the cost.  Raise the electricity fees to cover the costs.  Then the users, benefactors of the dams, will be paying the costs. This could be done administratively with the Federal Government.

    Just one man’s opinion.

Rick, for me I am looking at the quality of the fishery, the absence of modern day congestion, great scenery and great people.  By quality of fishery I specifically am avoiding the stocking trucks and elbow-to-elbow fishermen.

You will find me on waters such as the Au Sable, Manistee, Yellowstone and upper Green tributaries. Therefore my top 3 states are Michigan, Montana and Wyoming.
