Buzz, that is a pixel peeper making that observation. When a 36mp  image is displayed at the same size (say 8X10) as a 12mp image quality is going to be about equal. Its only when you start to display/print large images that issues with artifacts rear their ugly head.  For the web or magazine, Zach would be able to do a lot of cropping an still have a great image.

Personal observation, I have not seen any of my glass fail to perform well with my D800.

Zach, the D800 produces about a 47MB file when shooting 14bit NEF. If I have done my math right, that works out to more than 20,000 images per 1TB drive.

Loren, looking at today’s Nikon DX bodies you are not giving up any noticeable reach when using a D800 on a super telephoto.  And if you are close enough to fill the frame, what detail.

For being able to see LCD in bright sun light, try a Hoodman loop.

Birds, especially small birds, are always a focal length issue.  Those that peruse birds find themselves with 600mm lens + tc2.0lll + crop sensor bodies and they still complain about the lack of reach.

That being said, one of the great bargains in Nikon’s lens line up is the current Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens. For birds in the yard, the larger water birds along the river  and the bald eagle in Yellowstone, generally, 300mm is enough reach.

Even though I have the range covered with a 70-200mm f2.8 and a 300mm f2.8 I still have and will keep the 70-300mm.

I just want to know how much I am paying and what I’m getting for it.

Bob, this might fall under the old saying …be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

Just looking at state government, and I will be using GA as an example (FLA should be very similiar).  The State budget is compiled by the Office of Planning and Budget (OPB) from budgetary request reports compiled by the fiscal officers of each separate State Agency or Unit of State Government.  There are at least 40 people who work full time analyzing these request, reviewing cost trends, and reviewing YTD expenditures as compared to budget.  The budget document (Appropriation Act ) is printed on legal paper (both sides) and is about a 1/2 inch thick and there is a “Tracking Document” equally as large that tracks changes made by the General Assembly as the Act works its way to being passed.  The detail of the Act is Unit of Government then line item of expenditure. Where, as an example, DOT would have a line item for HWY Contracts of about $800,000,000.00 or so (just an estimate) but there will be no detail of the 70-100 contracts that would make up that amount. And there are hundreds of similiar line items for which supporting detail would fill up rows and rows of 5 drawer file cabinets.

If one were to stay on top of what you are getting for your tax money, just at the State level, I doubt you would have time for work, much less time for fishing.

I have no problem paying taxes for proper government services.  I just want to know how much I am paying and what I’m getting for it.

A very big issue with “proper government services” is that the 300 million or so tax payers in this country have about 300 million different definitions for “proper Government services”.

There is no surprise about the excise tax on fishing equipment, fisherman lobbied Congress for years to get it passed.

Geeze, phone cameras are getting better and better.
I even use my iphone for pictures sometimes.. :-[

Just keep in mind that in some States/Regions a cell phone on a fishing river may be considered a criminal offense.

I’ve also heard that they try to forbid dealers from discounting.

I am pretty sure that it is still unlawful to restrict discounting.  However, it is very much lawful to require a dealer to agree to Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) provision.

MAP provisions are often referred to on the internet as price fixing.

Douglas, if you are willing to wait 60 days pass the ship date for the D800, I predict there will be plenty of “lightly used” bodies for sale at a reasonable cost savings.

We will be see a lot of complaints, like those with the D7000, that my camera will not focus, the D800 images are soft, ETC.
