Roy ConleyMemberFor basic landscape and portrait use on a DX body I would suggest you start with a 17-55MM f2.8 G lens. Not the cheapest, but a very good quality DX glass that should do well on the wide end for landscapes and the high end will give the perspective of about a 80mm for portraits. The f2.8 will also enable you to easily isolate the background on your portrait shots.
At B&H it goes for $1370.

Roy ConleyMemberWhile I am a Nikon guy and I can not speak for Canon directly, one issue is the effect on AF that a TC has on a camera.
Roy ConleyMemberA week-ago Saturday, I was on the Toccoa and the water temp was 42 at 2 PM.
Roy ConleyMemberFrom what I have heard, they will lube, clean and check the calibration as well.
Roy ConleyMemberRegarding the lower, there is no place to camp (All Private) and TVA is doing a lot of generating so wading is pretty much out.
I can’t comment about the upper other than saying there are plenty of park land/National Forrest camp areas available.

Roy ConleyMemberDo the Simms boots run pretty true to size, or should I go one size up?
.Yes and No, they are true to size if you are wearing only a pair of street socks. But 1 size up is needed for me with a pair of light wool socks and the 3mm neoprene feet of my waders.

Roy ConleyMemberIf you were pleased with your current 70-200mm the day before this new lens was announced, I fail to see how that should have changed.
While we may have this THING for the latest and greatest, your current lens is a very good one that many would love to have.
Roy ConleyMemberTrue Roy, but they, like the TSA post their baggage rules on line. Probably not a bad idea to carry a copy of those as well.
And if I remember correctly, the plane captain has final word on what comes aboard, regardless of the written rules you may have.
The moral of this issue is to take advantage of UPS and ship all of the fishing stuff ahead and reserve your carry on for a change of clothes and your camera gear. It is reassuring to have the delivery confirmation from UPS the day before you fly.

Roy ConleyMemberSuggest you print out the TSA rules from the website and carry a couple of copies with you, just in case you get an agent who wants to make an issue of your equipment.
But keep in mind that any airline can have rules more restrictive than TSA.

Roy ConleyMemberIt depends, upon when your older rods were made. Go over to the Winston rod site http://www.winstonrods.com/forum/ and some of those guys can give specific answers if you know what the old rods serial numbers were. I know that there was a period of time when the IM6 production was the same blank as what the WT blank is.

Roy ConleyMemberWhat I was TOLD is that the Bass Tournament folks set a rod max length limit of 8 feet.
Roy ConleyMemberWhile the temp will not be an issue, the humidity may be during the warmer months.
Roy ConleyMemberThe other thing would be fly fishing shirts that owe nothing to tradition and are designed purely around not getting nuked by the sun.
Tropic weight like LL Bean or Simms or Columbia, but with a high collar, maybe like a turtle neck that could be rolled up or down, and very long sleeves that cover more of your wrists & top of the hand.
I see things that are close, but not in very light cotton or the like for the heat. For those that are not aware, Rit Dye makes a “Sun Guard” product that can be used to make most any garment a SPF 30 by just adding the stuff to the washing machine. It is sold in many drug stores next to the dye.

How about the new feature in the Camery’s that allows it to run away and kill all of the occupants?
“Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States, the company’s largest-ever U.S. recall, to address problems with a removable floor mat that could cause accelerators to get stuck and lead to a crash.”

Roy ConleyMemberI think it would have been helpful if we all indicated where or not we are full time eyeglass wears (I am). I believe this will give the reader more in site when one is discussing how a brand/type hold up over time. My experience in watching non-daily wears handling shades is that many people are very careless with them and some think nothing of throwing their shades around.
My experience with polycarbonate lens has been very good. I have two pair that are 5 years old (daily wear) and none of the lenses have any scratches or pock marks.
As far as clearness issues with the various materials, I am not sure there is any merit to this issue once anti-glare and 100% UV coatings have been applied.
Also, when comparing prescription to non-prescription glasses the prescription lenses generally will be made from a high index material (whether glass, plastic ETC.) where off the shelf sun glasses may not. All glass is not made equal.

Roy ConleyMemberI still see Silver, as well as, Bronze but with a full Silver neck going for around $100 many dealers will not stock many.
Roy ConleyMemberDoug –
How do you use that stuff? Also, which one in the link you sent is the actual product?
Zach
With CDC flies just put the fly into the powder container shake and rub it in after you remove fly. For traditional dries, I use Aquel 1st and once the fly starts sinking I refresh the dry with the powder.
Best stuff out there and $8.00 will get you a 20 year supply. Just do not breath the stuff in. Since it does not combine with water, your lungs have a hard time getting the stuff back out. IE. only use out of doors.

Roy ConleyMemberWhen selecting a light, I keep reminding myself that one of its uses will be seeing well enough to wade back to the bank and walk back to the truck through the woods at night.
Roy ConleyMemberThe original poster, however, makes a point that is lost on some.
Roy ConleyMemberLauren: The rod maker sets (determines) the retail price. Dealers must sign agreements to sell at the designated price or loose their ability to sell a specific line of rods. Therefore, if the maker were to drop the price the retailers would follow. What was $600 retail is now $450 retail with dealer cost dropping from $300 to $225. The retailers would still make the same % which is what they are after.
All of this however, I believe to be a moot discussion as no rod maker can afford to abandon the warranty program. Competitors would take away a large % of sales and that rod maker would be no more.
