took us a few hours to go from eagle to beaver the weekend kobe got in trouble-traffic un related.it definately is a cross over toward a jig/soft plastic
i’ll usually ask my client who i’m tying for how traditional they are in what they want to fish. if a rubber tail crosses the line, i’ll tie something else.
same with my shad flies. some can be tied on a lead jig head which is basically a crappy jig.
personally, i have no issue fishing either but if you put one of those buzz spinners on a fly, forget it. thats where i draw the line
that brown’s left pec fin is quite transparent.

picked up my tails at urban angler on friday after work.
many thanks to urban angler for going out of their way for not only ordering them for me, but holding on to them till i got a chance to swing on by and pick them up.i’ve got a great straw cowboy hat i picked up at the space cowboy in breck. you can get them at any hat shop.
it has a metal band around the brim that can be molded to shape and a sweat band on the inside. i think it was $20
there are a lot of them on ebay
other than that, its sunvisor for me.
my dad has one of those orvis broad brim hats with mesh around the top. he loves it. its fairly crushable too.
I was there in July I think, toward the end. A week before the goonies rock pic was taken in the horizon thread.

This is the fish I wrote about in the story/writing thread. Put it down, turned off camera, and held it in moving water for a loooong time.
I encountered bull trout in the streams feeding idaho’s lake pend oreille.
I don’t know the stream as it took almost an hour of 4wd roads to get there.I started at an old campsite and fished upstream. All cutts for the first hour and then only bull trout. Never seen such HUGE and AGGRESSIVE fish in such a skinny creek. It was like hooking steelhead in a Shennandoa National Park stream.
I caught them all on streamers (untili the wife broke off the last of the 3 streamers I had)

i’ve always tried to base my horizon shots on the claude monet painting, ‘Garden at Sainte-Adresse’ as he divided (noticeably like the french flag) the division between sea, land, and sky.
i use the graph in my view finder to divide the scene accordingly and move my body/camera up and down just enough to get the horizon divided.

I fished for bones on Kauai.
I didn’t catch one but was hanging out with some guys bait fishing for dinner.I watched them gut a bone that was in the 8lb range. The stomach was FULL of nickel sized, light/pale, pink crabs. Sort of oyster cracker shaped/size.
Only advice I have is to take some small, pink crab patterns, and me
I tie about 3 different patterns of hoppers from somewhat realistic to just plain suggestive. More realistic are prettier to the angler and take longer to tie. The suggestive ones can be cranked out real fast and work just as well.
I have found that all patterns work equally well and the fish don’t seem too selective with them from colorado to virginia.
Sure there are lots of colors and hues in hoppers but the fish really only sees its belly and legs. Most hoppers are counter shaded (dark dorsal, light ventral) so I find that if I do tie with color in mind, I only focus on the belly. I usually go with black to stand out more against the sky. A fish has a certain ‘search pattern’ it uses to look for prey. If something stands out, it might be more likely to be eaten.
The size and how it splats on the water and the drift matter more to me than the color.
Hoppers either swim to shore or just dead drift. Some will eventually sink.
Go with a variety of sizes and patterns as with the ones mentioned above. As hoppers are a solid meal for a fish I don’t think they’d pass it up, most can’t afford to be that selective.

edit: i tied a bunch of hoppers in a variety of colors and sizes for a group going out to jackson hole last fall. they said the shop they stopped at looked at them and laughed, then proceeded to sell them $200 worth of ‘local’ flies that didn’t catch a fish. They were so fed up with fishing the ‘local’ patterns and getting skunked that they didn’t get around to fishing mine (which would have been a good variable in their attempts), they went out and got drunk.
will, would you agree with me that butterflies are one of the most difficult animals to photograph (unless its cold out)?
by the time i focus on them they move ! every time!
Only the ‘bows and brookies are stocked. True about finicky browns, I’ve rarely caught one bigger than palm sized. Most likely due to them being ‘native’ now and a bit more educated. I want to say Lefty had something to do with that but I’m not sure.
As for the lake, we found a HUGE dead largemouth in the stream that must have come from the lake. It looked like a florida largemouth. Find one of those in the lake and it’ll be good fun.
The streams feeding the lake all have native brookies in them. That is a good alternative when the tailwater is crowded.
