All the mags that Zach mentions are good. I also like Tail, which is focused on salt water fly fishing.
Zach, can you provide some more info on where you stayed and fished. I know from FB that you were in the Rosario area. My friends and I are planning another Strobel trip for next Feb and we want to add something else. We are thinking of Rio Grande but that is pretty expensive. Phil
As one our our guides, Alfredo Bovio, said about every 15 minutes or every time we hooked another big fish “this is incredible.” It was truly one of the most incredible trips of my life, and I have done a lot.
If his website said what you say it did, he is wrong. I agree that you should call your cc company if you paid with a credit card. However, before you do, I suggest calling the fly shop owner again and telling him that you are going to dispute the charge and offer him one last chance to fix it. You might also tell him that in this day and age with social media you could post all over the internet about what he did. Save all of your emails.
There are plenty of good NOLA area guides, but getting on their schedules is another matter. Most have repeat clients who get the prime spots. I fish with Rich Waldner and I have one of the prime spots. I do not think he takes many new clients. He is the only one I have ever fished with but I have heard great things about Tristan. My buddy who fishes with Rich with me has been fishing with another guide he really likes. When I talk with him I will let you know.
I went to one of the two Anchorage showings. Both were sold out. Prizes were donated by local merchants but no big deal since I never seem to win anything anyway. I was totally bored with the films. I almost left at the intermission. Many of the people I talked with were also bored. I cannot even remember what the films were but I remember films from the previous years.
Zach, I am not sure of the knot from your description but for tarpon I use another loop knot. A half improved Homer Rhodes. You can look it up and see if it is the knot you are looking for. It is a jam knot that make a loop and is good for heavy tippet. The normal loop knot you posted does not work very well for heavy tippet. The Homer Rhodes involves an overhand knot tighten down so it makes a figure 8, feeding the end through the 8, and then tying an overhand around the standing line and jamming it. It never comes out.
Call a local taxidermist. I suspect the cost where you live is way less expensive than the cost where I live. A buddy has a European mount of a dall sheep and I really like it.
I have not tried the fly lines. However, I did order one of the Hadron Colliders in hot pink.I have not received it yet, but I did receive an email that it is being colored, and as soon as the paint dries it will be shipped. I was also informed that everyone else who ordered one in hot pink really liked it. I asked for information on the size of the collider so I can prepare a pad for it but was told they still have not had time to measure it since they are so busy painting.
I have never fished from a skiff but I have fished from many drift boats here in Alaska. If there is any rough water I would want the traditional drift boat shape. Those big high sides and bow shaped to push the water away and out are essential. None of my friends who own and fish these ever complain about ease of mobility. In fact, many of my guide friends say the bigger, wider boats are easier to maneuver. There are some really sweet new interior designs on the market these days and you can pretty much get what you want. Some boats I fish from which are really nice include Boulder Boat Works, Willie, and Alumaweld. Some of the Pavati boats I have seen are really well thought out- especially the ability to walk around and the door.
I mostly use a Norvise. It is really well made and I love tying on it. I also have a Danvise which never gets used anymore and I probably should take it to my cabin. I also had a Dingo Vise which I used every one in awhile but this is also a very well made vise. A friend gave me a really good deal on it. A few months ago a gentleman from the lower 48 asked to buy it and I finally did sell it and he gave me enough money so I bought the Dynaking barracuda if I want a pedestal vise. It seems really well built but I have not used it much yet. IMHO, the Dingo is a better vise.
WOW! That is one impressive fish. I’d love to try that some time. You don’t have to say the name of the river, but what part of the country are you in?
Well, it looks like it’s my lucky day. I just mentioned to the woman who lets me live with her that it sure would be nice to have a hadron collider to put down at my cabin. She was in agreement. I was thinking it would be nice to have around at the barbecues when the fishing is slow. Also, it will give the moose something to talk about in the winter. You did not say how much they are but since I am sure you are totally honest and really know your thing, I’ll take one. If it works out as you promise and I know it will, I’ll get one for my neighbor to enjoy at his cabin. There are 13 cabins in my area and I bet everyone will want one. How much will shipping be? I am hoping you can get this in the USPS medium flat rate box. Are you also going to be marketing particles to use in the collider? Wow, I might want to be your Alaska distributor. As far as color, can you do something that will match my sweeties eyes?
