I’ve been going to the Fly Fishing Film Tour since the beginning. The first several years were great, with good films and lots of fun. 2013 was a step down, but still OK. Films were acceptable and door prizes were good. 2014, another step down. Films weren’t as good, and it seemed the B team was sent to the local show.

I just got back from the 2015 show. Films sucked for the most part. Mediocre technical quality, lots of political statements, almost no story lines. No moderators showed up and they sent no door prizes. A local fly bar owner set it up and was able to get some door prizes donated locally. With about 300 in attendance, it was an overall disappointment. Seems like they are trying to milk a few bucks our of the tour before it goes down the tubes completely.

I went to one of the two Anchorage showings. Both were sold out. Prizes were donated by local merchants but no big deal since I never seem to win anything anyway. I was totally bored with the films. I almost left at the intermission. Many of the people I talked with were also bored. I cannot even remember what the films were but I remember films from the previous years.

If you were able to catch the tour in the early years consider yourself lucky. Last night’s showing guaranteed that I’ll never attend another. Self serving political posturing about global warming and pollution, anglers missing strikes and throwing their rods in the water time after time then acting like complete fools when a fish was caught, endless minutes of fish gulping flies. Even a couple of glasses of wine didn’t help. I left before it was over.

I went to the F3T show a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The swag and the hosts were great. The films were great too. Last year I went to the IF4 show at one of the fly fishing shows. It was absolutely the worst. I was hoping it was just because it was the IF4 show, but it looks like they are both going downhill.
