Summer fishing on the Alabama River is for me all about fishing for hybrid. Glad to see other folk enjoying it too.

I’ve had this debate with my friends too.  “Steelhead” is a non-scientific descriptive term based on how they look.  These were football shaped and bright chrome.  They are all Onchorhynchus mykiss, and having a debate about subspecies is a little like arguing over whether Georgians are racially superior to Alabamans (they are).

Best warm water is definately in Bama, plus its nearly untouched by fly fishermen. But then again I am biast.

that size six is what I would use dfor bass as a matter of fact i used it today in an olive craw pattern and it was money. I thought you might like the feed back.

Thanks for sharing. You might be surprised in how small a bass will go in food offerings. I have caught many 3# bass on size 8 stealth bombers when bream fishing. It all depends on what the prevelent food source is in the area. Conventional anglers for bass have been saying for years to down size when possible for more and some times bigger fish. I can say they are right.

it all depends on your market. I teach folks from all incomes and some folks with money will have me set them up with high end material. So rather they know it or not, they ended up with a package. Personally I just wish the combos that they made now had a better line and a faster action rod. It would be alot easier to point students to set ups similar to my own. Most often a student likes to emmulate their teacher at least in brand. Thats my experience anyway.

I guess I am going to be the cheap one here. I found a waist pack at wal-mart that holds two bugger barns and two 32 oz nalgeen bottles. Paid $15. I am satisfied. If I need more water water i clip additonal nalgeens to the old simms belt.

Actually I’d bet 99% of people in the airport have no idea what a Simms or Sage means.  I always get asked about rod tubes in the Airport and clearly no one has a clue what it is except from a few.  I think you are no more likely to get something stolen with a FF logo on your bag over Samsonite.

Funny story – I had my car broken into once.  I had a Sage XP, Sage VPS, and two Gunnison reels in the back window of the car.  Roughly 1500 dollars in gear…And the person who broke in walked off with only the pair of pants left in the front seat and my girlfriend’s purse (which had nothing in it).  Cant blame the guy, he had no idea that he walked away from easy pickings.

tim is 100% right. No one knows or even gives a hoot about fly-fishing gear. They also have no knowledge of the value of these items. I wouldn’t worry.

Tell the truth I use a 6wt. TFO TiCr to do most of my bass fishing and I will say that its not all that hard. Before that I was using an 8wt Scott but I found that I enjoyed fishing the 6 for bass much better. The thing I learned was just to slow down my casts and open my loops abit and it allowed me to throw big hairy Fodders and clousers.

I don’t see where a larger rod would be needed for those tube flies. Once again, great tie.
