No problem Dusty, forewarned is forearmed, it means I will take particular note of the issues raised. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

    Its only a tool.

About to leave on a 10 day road trip so I guess I’ll know the results when I get back. I didn’t like the sound of that review though……..

    Will post some results.

In my view no one has made the perfect camera back pack and Dave Anderson and I have taken a look at a hell of a lot of them and are still searching. I’ve ended up using a 60 liter waterproof canyoning backpack and fitted a padded and divided insert from a Lowepro pack into it. It is not brilliant for access but as far as robust and waterproof goes its just brilliant. I’ve had it now for around 3 years and its done countless trips. I did have it modified so it wasn’t quite so deep which has made access easier. There’s no provision for a tripod but it would not be a big issue to ย glue some straps onto it. In it I can carry a pretty good kit, one body 4 lenses, flash and various attachments.

Total cost in Aussie dollars was around $200 but it is totally waterproof. It even saved my life when I broke through a crust while crossing a river in New Zealand and found myself in quicksand with water coming over the top of my waders – the bag provided enough floatation for me to turn in time to get out, pity about the 5D that was around my neck at the time…….. ๐Ÿ˜•

I’ve been using the new Rio indicator nymph line on a Sage 599. Was using it a few weeks ago in terrible (windy) conditions with 3 tungsten bead heads and a wool indicator. The advantage in those conditions was that the orange tip meant you could pick up your indicator in amongst the froth.

The way fly lines are manufactured and then packaged means that the tip section has less bouyancy than the belly. If the tip of your fly line keeps sinking (and it bothers you) use a micrometer to determine where the tip becomes the front taper and cut it off. You don’t really need it…..

I’ve seen one triploid landed. That was in Tasmania. I was fishing with a good friend who is a guide who had never seen one landed either. He’d seen them hooked by his clients but no one had landed one. This thing took him to the cleaners, it was like comparing a trout to a tuna that jumped. He knew straight away that he’d finally hooked one. ten minutes earlier he’d hooked two rainbows at the same time ( we were fishing 2 fly rigs and they put up a bit of wriggle but this thing went ballistic.

They’re all fish and they’re all good. This triploid was caught very early in the season when all the natural rainbows were spawned out slabs.

A bit like the hookers (remember you started it Zack) – if the option is a couple of spawned out slabs past their use by date or something that’s been tarted up, that’s out looking and is available, and has some pretty spectacular references, but might cost, I think I’d take a serious second look at the state of the credit card. ย ;D ;D

In the long run it’ll just make books on paper more valuable…….. so we’ll keep printing them on paper.

The least effective presentation is to turn the leader over straight, especially in current and especially if you want to get the nymph(s) deep. Lengthen the tippet use fluorocarbon and try to get some slack between the indicator and the fly so it can sink unhindered. Open your loop up that’ll help prevent the leader from turning over dead straight.

Mike I have a few of the new Xi3’s and one of the 99’s, a 5 weight. This rod really impresses me, I think its going to be a GREAT rod for New Zealand nymphing. I think its also going to be sensational for single spey as it roll casts so beautifully, it loads in the middle and lower down which is what makes a great roll casting rod.

I’ve cast the Xi3’s next to the TCX’s and one Xi2 in the 10 weight. Have not fished with them yet, plan to do that next week. Cosmetically they’re a step up, Fuji Alconite stripping guides are progressive and the new reel seat is very sweet with raised locking rings that are well knurled. They cast beautifully although the TCX’s are my preferred implements at this stage. The 10 weight is a half ounce lighter than its predecessor and is even lighter than the TCX!!! Strap a 6010 on it and it feels like an 8 weight. The swing weight is heavier however, a legacy of their quite different taper designs.

Simon try a dab of superglue on the red head, it does a great job of preserving colour on the superglue buzzer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Good job Andrew and thanks for your comments guys. Its always great to get feed back both good and bad. Sometimes in this game it feels like you’re working in a vacuum and of course you get to see this stuff so often it becomes over familiar so feed back is GREAT. Glad you liked the informal style, also glad the download works so well. Will have to tie a couple of dozen for NZed this summer.

I took an unplanned dunking in New Zealand when I trod in some quicksand. I had a 5D around my neck and it was submerged briefly. I put it in front of a heater that night and then I put it in a ziplok bag with silica-gel crystals and left it in the sun for a few days. It was written off for insurance and replaced but it still works fine although I have to reset the dates and times every time I use it. Its my back-up body now, usually has the long lens on it.
