I have always believe that Rio is not quite up to the standard of the other line producers, as much as AirFlow tended to produce a decent line on occasion. However, my first experience with AirFlow was a spring creek on my Scott G, which didn’t work, I stuck a SciAngler XPS on it and it sprung to life.
I had a Cortland on my Sage XP and it didn’t cut it, stuck a GPX on it and it sung, changed that to a Expert Distance and cast it miles, now got a Shark Skin and it cooks.Michael knows what he is doing, “pics or it didn’t happen” seems to show it, so if he is saying that Rio has their act together, then I would like to try it out.
We discussed this at length on my last trip, talking about the Sage lines and the end result was that the Rio line was getting there.
Back the marketing thing, we discussed this in a thread about Loops marketing and advert, its kind of overwhelms us with the info and the theory that we are changing as a community. Are we fishing in worse conditions because of the photos we see in the magazines, or is the kit allowing us to???
I think it is a bit of both, but the real question is, are the marketing people telling us that the kit is better, or are we out there figuring it out for ourselves?? I want to try everything, if only I could afford it…

Here’s what I can add…
Firstly take a guide on at least your first day, then again on your first day on a spring creek. I have had people tell me they learnt more in one day on the water with a guide, than in their previous 5 years of fly fishing put together.

I would love to see the taper… and I am definitely going to cast and fish it… send a mail to the local distributor now. We have the exact conditions that will suit it, big still water, cristal clear to very spooky Yellowfish, that are now becoming very fly shy…
I only have one Rio, and its called a Sage line, Quiet Taper 2w, it performs well and the wear is as good as on my Sci Angler Quiet Taper 00w.
However I do find it a little too supple, if that is possible, and that it collapses if I fish it in warmer conditions.
Michael, what is on the end of yours???

Leader – 9 foot tapered to 5x, preferably Sci Angle or Frog Hair
Tippet – 5 thru 7 X
Fly or Team – Dry & Dropper, Hopper and CDC PTN or Stimulator and ZAK/Bead Head/EmergerI’d encourage you to tie a range of flies that simulate various “tree droppings.”

Saw Fly Lava – unweighted Caddis, size 14Attach a splitshot 6 to 8 inches above a stimulator — it has been one of the most productive carp flies I’ve fished with to date.
Yip, I like that trick too, with rubber legs. However, I fish it behind a Carp Fritz or above a bugger…
I also use a RAB (check the fly tying section) in the same configuration.
And when there are diving Caddis about, add a little CDC to a Elk Wing Caddis and do the same… the fish take these things on the drop and without a second thought.
5.5kg fish taken on a diving Caddis… and it was the runt of the 4 cruisers I was casting to, the others were 7 or 8 kg’s or more… it shot past the other three and moved about 3 meters to eat the fly, which had landed about 2 feet in front of the biggest one.
B-cuts? Your kidding right? Excellent.
That’s what went thru my mind…
Listen, if those are B-cuts, please cut them to disc and mail them to me, I would be honoured to call them my own…

pic 1 – just have one fly in front and 2 or 3 behind, with 3 or 4 in focus.
pic 2 – spread the flies out a little and then have less flies in the back ground…
