Mike LewisMemberI’m on my 4th Subaru Outback. I use it in my work as well as play, so it is off road a lot. Solid performer on and off the road and with the new transmission gets good mileage – 26 to 28 MPG in mixed city and highway driving. It is built like a rock and comes fully equiped (all wheel drive, roof rack, all terrain tires, spoke wheels) for a very reasonable price (about $25,000). Inside storage is good and the roof is low enough to load the kayaks while the ground clearance is one of the highest of any SUV.
I have a 2011 (wife’s daily driver, family trip car) that we absolutely love. I’ve done several trips in it, including Michigan in the snow, to Florida with kayaks on the roof, and 5 guys with 5 backpacks. I have gotten higher than 31 mpg on the highway when you stay around 65mph. It is about 25 in town and 23 with the kayaks on the roof.
My other ride is a 2003 f150 work truck with 170k on it. Never had a single issue with it and I can fit 4+ kayaks/canoes in the 8′ long bed. Averages in the 17 mpg range with the little V8.

Mike LewisMemberI look forward to that Chris. But regarding flood control, I just don’t see how that Dam has anything to offer. From normal to overflowing you are talking about maybe four vertical feet. That’s not much of a storm…
I have been below it when they sluiced over the top one time. That was interesting.

It will take me a bit to digest all of what has been written in this thread. However regarding floods, I can tell you (as a registered professional engineer) that MFD provides zero flood control with regards to the 100-year flood and the FEMA flood insurance study and maps. It was of zero help in 2009 as well with the big flood.
I am a big fan of either dredging the silt or dam removal.
Mike LewisMembertrucker driftwood
Mike LewisMemberSounds cool!
1 trucker.
Mike LewisMemberIt was a good trip for sure! In addition to Chris’s pics, here are a few more, including a little shark on a pink clouser.

I want to move there!
Mike LewisMemberI know a really good guide on the west coast of the island. He is a superb fly fisherman and put us on many good fish of all species. I went there last May and posted a report if you would like to search for it.
Have fun!
Mike LewisMemberSpeaking of cool skin-cancer wounds, here is my left arm two year ago. Had a mole biopsied that came back poor, so off it went plus 10mm. Got a sweet staph infection included with the surgery, free of charge.
Wear sunscreen and cover up.

Mike LewisMemberI got the same camera a few weeks ago. I have not tried the underwater shot as I haven’t fished in much than stained bass water. I haven’t tried very hard, but yet figure out the GPS function.
Overall, I am pleased with it.

Mike LewisMemberAwesome. When does it get christened?
Mike LewisMemberVery cool!
Mike LewisMemberLooks like a great trip, beautiful fish. I like that cicada pic!
A trip out that way would be a great adventure, putting it on my list of places to visit one day
Mike LewisMemberThanks for the advice guys. The top pic is of course a used fly right before loosing the eyes. I am going to try the goop, let it sit a day then experiment with some CCG and SHHAN.
Here are a few that I have been working on that are missing the magic.

Mike LewisMemberThat’s a cool rig for sure. If you get a chance, an action pic of the trolling motor and casting platform would be neat to see how you have set it up.
Mike LewisMemberGreat Post. Not too often can you wear shorts for wet wading in March!
This TR has me Jonesin’ for some striper waters up this way. Usually they’re up in April, but this early Spring will have them shallow sooner I bet. Those stripers can put some serious strain on the graphite.
I can’t wait.Thanks. Shoot, after your post, I’m jealous after those the big muskies you’re catching.
Mike LewisMemberHey are you guys using a floating or sinking line?
Intermediate (outbound) for me
Mike LewisMemberVery cool boat Zach, I’ve enjoyed following the progress. Hope to see it up on “The Sluice” soon!
Mike LewisMemberGreat TR! Love the fish and the IPA. That set of shoals brings back some fond memories from when I lived in GA. Keep those striper spots under your hat!
Thanks! No doubt!
Mike LewisMemberMy condolences on your loss, sounds very tough. Hopefully 2012 will improve.
Mike LewisMemberThanks Zach. What brand and weight of bit wire do you recommend?
When you say about half way to the tail of the fly, does the fly material “hide” the stinger?
Mike LewisMemberNot sure the length and difficulty of the hike you have in mind, but I have backpacked while wearing waders and boots, carrying my pack. I’ll bring a lightweight pair of sneakers of something to walk around in camp.
