Mike LewisMemberGood like a nice trip.
How did the jet outboard work in the salt, and the rest of the boat for that matter?
Mike LewisMemberGood luck, always interesting to see some new ideas. The weather does look fairly poor for North GA this weekend.
Mike LewisMemberThere was a thread on NGTO where the local DNR specifically said to call the TIP (turn in poacher) hotline when you see the law breaking. This was more towards trout but I assume it would apply here as well. (800)-241-4113
http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103939
Even if the DNR cannot respond that occurrence, it will be on their radar and enough calls can shift resources to the needed areas. I’d probably go that route versus direct confrontation. Without going into too much detail on a public forum, I’d say the TIP can be effective.
Shifting gears, as you know with this particular fishery, you only get maybe 1 day per week average over the last few years where fly-fishing is even viable due to water conditions. So I have no problem when other methods of fishing are used as long as it is in accordance with the law and ethical (which IMO is: if cut-bait use proper circle hooks, if lures no trebles, strong enough gear to land fish quickly, 99% of time C&R, respect to other anglers, etc.).
Mike LewisMemberI caught some in the under the 1 or 2 pound class back in May. Also have caught and had buddies catch a few over 20 lb this year. Numbers do seem down.
I will say pressure has been at an all time high, at least in June-July.
No news yet from the DNR, I think the “questionnaire” that they put out was received pretty poorly statewide as it was mailed out to residents of bordering counties only.
I didn’t really mind that part, but I didn’t care for how the question was asked – ban all bait or not. Right now we have a no live-bait fish ban with a one rod in the water per person maximum. I think the rule as is a good balance (if strictly enforced as written – but that’s a different discussion for DNR manpower). But the question asked by the DNR did not have an option to say “keep rules as currently exist”. I doubt you would ever see a majority vote on full ban on bait in this stretch, especially with the GON trolls.
Mike LewisMemberI’m confused. What is this for?
Why is it made of 3/4″ insulation (aside from it is scrap material). Is it supposed to float? Independently?
I would imagine lifting it up from the handles with the battery would break the foam board.
Mike LewisMemberVery nice, I really like the vibe of the second video.
Mike LewisMemberGood luck at the new job.
Hopefully the break from work will be awesome – I’d forgo the tiling and just fish everyday.
Mike LewisMemberThanks for the camera work Zach!
2014 was a lost season of white bass for me, I think I might have caught 6 or so this spring, all small. The cold weather winter must have changed something, I did pretty good in 2013.
The striper season is starting much better!
Mike LewisMemberMy current situation is an F150 with 2wd and a 4.6 v8 that I have owned for 11 years with zero problems that is my daily driver and tow truck. You could probably pick up one similar for $2,500.
For long trips, my wife and I have a 2011 Subaru Outback that we couldn’t be more happy with. Many beach trips with tons of gear, dogs, boats on the factory roof rack, and a few skiing trips. Can’t speak on the towing performance, manual says 2,700 lbs, but I would think that would be pushing it.
Mike LewisMemberQuick observation, a lot of the anglers in the pictures have their faces obscured by a hat or shadow from the hat. Something I have been trying to work on to improve some of my pictures recently. In low light situations, headlamps off!
And the go pro hat in a hero shot – that definitely has to get taken off!
Mike LewisMemberLooks like a mighty fine trip Zach, congrats on the permit!
Mike LewisMemberScott, I’ve been looking at that exact vest to upgrade to. Thanks for the feedback.
Getting a little wiser over the years, I think a full time vest on the river rule is a good policy. Never know what might happen. I’ve only ever needed my vest on one canoe dump and a few times when I had to pull folks out of the river but I was sure glad I had it on (once helped a random drunk at the jumping rock that swallowed water, once some kids out in rough weather that couldn’t handle it and lost their boats).
Mike LewisMemberI own one of each and you’re welcome to try either. Pack is 33 lb and 119 is 43 lb per manufacturer, but I would like to actually weight each one on day. Probably could do it holding the boat on a bathroom scale. But I don’t have a bathroom scale. The pack feels FAR lighter.
With my Pack: I’ve stood while fly fishing in the pack in shallow salt flats in the Florida panhandle. It’s a “splashy” ride (like riding in an old Cadillac with bad shocks) in that you are kind of bouncing around as the bottom of the boat oil cans a bit. Still it was doable.

For the next trip down there I am getting rid of the “angler” plastic seat as it is really in the way and putting in a simple flat wood with woven mesh can seat. Should make sitting down from the standing position easier.
As for the 119 – I haven’t used it much as it is my boat for guests, but I would imaging it would be easier to stand in as it weighs more and has a stiffer plastic hull, although this is purely speculation.
I will note that it is far easier to stand in the pack barefoot. Flats booties are OK, but my usual Simms wader boots are tough to maintain balance.
That riverpirate guy (Randy Vining I believe) posts on ga river fishing a alot that he took teh seat completely out of his pack and stands in it all the time.

Mike LewisMemberThat looks like some really nice work, I hope it works as good as new. What an improvement.
My 25/20 is a two-stroke and only weighs 124 pounds, per the manufacture’s sticker on the side of the motor. It is however fairly loud and doesn’t seem to get killer mileage.
My next challenge is to rebuild the tiller handle with new bushings, apparently this is a common problem for 10-15 year old mercury of this size, the plastic just crumbles away after a decade or so. Should tighten up the steering response quite a bit.
I don’t have near as tough of a hull as you do, and I am trying to keep it on some tamer rivers around here, mostly for stripes and carp. I’m not sure if this is the ideal set up, but I got a pretty good deal on it, and it has run really well on the few shake down trips I’ve taken it out on.

Mike LewisMemberTravis, I’ve enjoyed following your adventures in the new boat when you post them on here.
That’s a pretty beat up intake foot – does it seem to take all of the abuse or does it pass it on to the rest of the motor? I recall you have a 40/30 yamaha, do you have a “shallow water” switch you can flip, where the motor can kick up if it hits things? Ever use it?I have a little used aluminum jon I got over the winter with a Merc 25/20 jet I’ve been running a little bit, still getting used to it.
Ever think of using “side skirts” as shown about 1/2 way down the page here:

Thanks,
Mike
Mike LewisMemberCongrats Zach! Some style points for sure there.
Mike LewisMemberAwesome boat Travis, thanks for the detailed write-ups.
Mike LewisMemberI actually really enjoyed the Allatoona WMA story, good story telling, I could picture the whole thing unfolding.
I’ve been curious about a Lake Allatoona Corp Property as well – I drove by a park a handful of months ago. I’ve attached the sign from it. I’m not a big hunter, but ever heard of a Cobb County Hunting Permit?

Mike LewisMemberDang, my subscription goes thru 2016 or something.
I renewed this past winter for 3 years plus 1 year for a friend for $20 or something like that. Must have really been too good to be true. I’d have to get my last issue or additional renewal add out to check for sure.
Mike LewisMemberMan, what a fish.
Looks like a great trip. -
