Mike LewisMemberLooks quite unique. Nice fish. I would love to try it, especially if I ever decide to go for the cutt/slam. Is it practical to fish out of a drift boat there?
It is in the middle of nowhere, but I suppose it would be possible to catch some rainbows and browns in the Truckee River between Tahoe and Reno which feeds into the lake.
As for a drift boat, it is not recommended. First problem is you have to pay an additional fee and you must always stay a minimum 250 feet from shore, which pushes you past the drop-off point where most of the fish run.
The other problem is the lake is 9 miles wide, and winds and waves can whip up to crazy levels in a manner of a few minutes. There are stories of guys getting blown across the lake and boats swamping.
Mike LewisMemberI was just responding to the initial question, but, the trip wasn’t so bad, just hard to coordinate a lot of people. I agree that you have to have a bunch of options open for the different guys on the trip.
Don’t be afraid to say “I’ll be here at 8am, if you’re not, I’ll see you at happy hour”.
Good article Zach.
Mike LewisMemberQuestion: Some buddies and I are planning a week-long trip to Montana and Yellowstone next August, flying in and out of Bozeman. There are six of us. Any tips on traveling with a group on a fly-fishing trip?
Six cars, six hotel rooms!
At least this is my answer after getting back from a 10-man skiing and fishing trip last weekend.
Mike LewisMemberGreat report and photo’s! Putting NZ on my bucket list.
Mike LewisMemberDoes it work?
YES!!!

Mike LewisMemberNo it was Buford Dam area.
Mike LewisMemberAwesome report man. I hope to do something similar for my 30th in Feb.
Mike LewisMemberIf you guys were float tubing, I think we did right around Bowman’s Island. I’m sorry that I didn’t stop to talk with you guys; I kept thinking we would hit the crowds at some point and I was trying to make sure Lauren got into some fish before that happened. Turns out it was incredibly empty out there.
Zach
Wow, small world huh? Our hike in was slightly more strenuous than expected and I was still trying to get my bearings when you floated by. Nice brown by the way.
My heart almost stopped when I head they were doing a dam release at 12:55pm on a Saturday! But we still managed to get in a solid 3 hours of fishing.
I plan on slipping out somewhere after the rain but before the release this afternoon, hoping for the rain to wake the trout up. Hopefully, I’ll have a story to tell.
Mike LewisMemberNice report and pictures, had fun out there.
Mike LewisMember
Fishing related. It stands for “set my drag”. Don’t get any lewd ideas.
Mike LewisMemberNice report. I was in a cold running river once this summer and passed a warmer running tributary that was stacked up with gar everywhere. Very impressive fish. Since then, I’m always keeping my eyes peeled for more.
Mike LewisMemberwelcome Mike, Im guessing your lewwdog elsewhere?
Correct. Thanks for the welcome guys and gals.
Mike LewisMemberNice job Mike. I would wager it was a several year holdover. You catch it recently? My understanding is they’ve stopped stocking the Hooch below Buford Dam with browns.
Zach
Both were caught last year. Below Buford dam, stocking of browns has been stopped for about 5 years (to my understanding). Below Morgan Falls Dam in the delayed harvest section, they stock a brown /rainbow mix every winter. With an unusually cool water temp summer due to an increase in releases from Buford Dam, I would expect several hold-overs to be lurking around the MFD area.
Mike LewisMemberHey Mike –
Is that last brown from the Hooch too? If so, well done.
Zach
Zach-
It is. From the DH section too, I believe it to be a holdover. My personal best on any portion of the hooch is this 24″er. Unfortunately, there was no one around to take a decent pic.
