Mike LewisMemberI’ve been on trips with Keith before when he’s had this boat, it’s definitely a clean, solid kayak. I’d buy it myself if I were in the market.
Mike LewisMemberGreat report Brad, thanks for the read. Looks like you have some beautiful country up there, I’m envious.
One question, it looks like you reels on the musky rods are left hand retrieve and the trout rods are right hand retrieve. Any particular strategy there?
Mike LewisMemberI love it up there. My wife is from the area and we head up to those parts a few times a year. I especially like the C&R area of the upper Manistee.
Good luck!
Mike LewisMemberThat’s a heck of a week! Solid work!
Mike LewisMemberGary – yep. Two trips, ten hours of driving, and only some white bass and perch to show for it. However, I’ll be back next year, I still have optimism for that place.
Fortunately, fishing gods decided to smile on me yesterday a little closer to home.
Mike LewisMemberZach – kind of.
With all the rains and full reservoirs, you have to get a little creative to find some warm water that’s not too stained with a good “bait” source for them.
That being said, I’d think this weekend would be a good time to give the old spey rod a shot. I’d think you could guess pretty easily what they are eating.
Mike LewisMemberGreat report. I went a few years ago but didn’t get to do any inshore/inland fishing. From the looks of your fish, that’s definitely something I would like to pursue if I get the chance to go down there again.
Mike LewisMemberI’m interested in this event also. The 13 year hatch for us in the Southeast, I’m told. What part of the year would you expect this to happen?
Mike LewisMemberto hell with trout! I’ll be tying that for bass!
thanks for sharing the pattern and glad to see that the bows appreciated them too. I will be tying a few of them myself. Two thumbs up 😎
Thanks. A river bass fly is what I originally thought of, so I tied a bunch in size 2. But, the pattern looked good and the bass haven’t quite heated up yet, so I tied some in size 6 for the trout.
Mike LewisMemberGreat shots and trip report Mike!
Was there a black caddis hatch? Â That last shot looks like a size 16 black caddis. Â The Hootch was literally on a blizzard hatch of BC today – it was dry fly heaven. Â
I am going the Chattooga DH next weekend – what flies were most effective? Â
Your report makes me happy because it looks like I timed the caddis hatch perfectly. Â
Neal, there was a small black caddis hatch and lots of midge-types everywhere. And a few drakes sporadically.
Mike LewisMemberGreat stuff Neal. I saw the EP Brush material at the store yesterday afternoon and couldn’t think of what it could be used for. Looks like a very cool pattern – thanks for the great tutorial!
Mike LewisMemberBeautiful work Neal, those are amazing.
I guess the rubber legs through the tubing keeps them from fouling?
Mike LewisMemberAwesome pics and tutorial Neal, thanks for putting that together. Those green patterns will be awesome on the Shoalies over the next few weeks.
Mike LewisMemberThanks. Â Any particular brand, or just one that meets those basic specs?
Kelly.
Not sure of the brand but I believe they are a well-stocked item in local outdoor shops.
Mike LewisMemberOK, I may have stretched the bow in my mind a bit. The brown was 20. Keep in mind, I have enormous hands.
Mike LewisMemberGreat report. We don’t have to many options for those guys around here but with pictures like those, it looks like it be worth a trip up 75.
Mike LewisMemberZach, you must have gotten some bad information. There are none of those fish in the Hooch, at least not in those stretches.
Mike LewisMemberLadder recommendations?
Kelly.
I’m no expert, but here is what I picked up on.
-Ladder are fold-able, and about 5 feet tall. You set them up in about belly to chest deep water so you can get out of the cold water and make casting easier.
-An all plastic ladder might float away if you stepped off of it. I would avoid this.
-Ladders with separate four legs (as opposed to connected by horizontal bar at the feet) are easier to jam into the lake bottom.
Mike LewisMemberI have had the Simms Freestone boots with the Vibram sole (no cleats) for a few years, pretty much since they hit the market.
They have pretty iffy traction in the stream, but work well hiking or in a boat.
Mike LewisMemberLooks like yall had fun. How did the rod do? I had a battery issue and could not make it out in the boat last weekend.
The rod worked out great, it was a cannon with the 300-gr line.
However, all the fish were keyed into nymphs we were fishing on 6-wts so I didn’t get any slime on the new big rod.
