MemberIn colorado the guys who wear them are mostly wannabe guides. The other main type of buff wearers I see are the type who want to fish right across the river from you. I swear, the only two times I’ve lost my cool on the river because of someone crowding me, the jackass was wearing a buff.

InactiveWhat cracks me up is all the photos of guys on flats boats and their beautiful snazzy lookin buff covering their face…yet they have a short sleeve shirt on and are wearing shorts…and flip flops.
If you are going to claim to wear a buff for utilitarian purposes (skin protection) you’d better cover up everywhere.

MemberFor the record, when I said buffs look stupid, I wasn’t suggesting that wearing one is a bad idea.

MemberMy take on fly fishing exposure compared to other sun exposure is, in a word – reflectivity. You can wear the biggest brimmed hat and still get burned to a crisp if you are on the water. That makes a BUFF indispensable in my opinion.

MemberMy problem is I can’t seem to find a wider brimmed hat that I actually like.
Have you tried the Pilbara hat from Sea to Summit? I’ve got one and I like it a lot.
Found one via Google with a picture here:

It’s a wide brimmed hat, but it’s not one of those giant goofy cowboy-type hats that the guide-wannabes out West wear. It’s not too heavy, and it’s breathable and vented so it doesn’t get too hot in the summer – that was a big selling point for me.
It’s also light-colored on top for staying cool, but dark under the brim to reduce glare – also important to me.
It’s also waterproof for what that’s worth, though that wasn’t a big selling point (if it rains I prefer rain gear with a hood over my head).
Best fishing hat I’ve found. I like a wide-brimmed hat more because it keeps glare out of my face and lets me see the fish better, but the sun protection is a good side benefit.

MemberLet me start by saying that i have been fly fishing for since i was about 9. I have also been a hunter for about the same length of time. My point is that i do a lot of stuff in the outdoors and have never felt the need to cover up. I can not for the life of me understand why fly fisherman feel the need to wrap their heads like members of al-qaeda. I see the pictures everywhere and dont understand it. Why dont people just use sunscreen or wear a hat? Honest question here, not making fun…
Because of all of the above answeres plus – fly fishermen are gear junkies.
After skin cancer removal #5 I think, I’m going in to give some more flesh next month.Apr 20, 2012 at 2:27 am #52031
Mike LewisMemberSpeaking of cool skin-cancer wounds, here is my left arm two year ago. Had a mole biopsied that came back poor, so off it went plus 10mm. Got a sweet staph infection included with the surgery, free of charge.
Wear sunscreen and cover up.

MemberI’m looking at getting one, can anyone tell me the difference between the UV kind and others?

Peter E.MemberNo wonder the canoe business is rough on me. I only managed to give away one free pamphlet. Fishy Terror isn’t doing as well as hoped.
