Michael PhillippeMemberZach,
You’re right – they need to get this thing in front of more people. I’ve toured Winston and Orvis both but the really telling statement in the video is that they have “built every rod we have sold for forty years in the US.”
Makes me proud to fish a Scott.
Michael PhillippeMemberKathy, How wonderful to got met Nick. I’ve always wanted to do so. He is most responsible for maintaining the quality – and often quantity –
Michael PhillippeMemberThe West is still in BIG runoff. My son guides in Missoula and doesn’t expect to be back to good fishing until July this year. Everthing is dropping but still far to high to safely wade. They will likely lose the entire floating season on Rock Creek. That said they will have epic fishing in July August and September.
The Beaverhead may still be muddy below High Bridge so call Frontier Anglers in Dillon and see.
The Madison will pretty much unwadeable until very late this summer – perhaps as late as August. Ennis is the lower Madison and isn;t wader friendly until August or September anyway. For a change, trying floating Ennis Lake for gulpers – big rainbows eating Callibaetis all morning. Try calling Brian Kimmel (http://www.briankimmelflyfishing.com/) He is a good guide with a special boat for Ennis Lake, member of US Fly Fishing team, and if you want to learn ti Czech nymph….
For Floating the Madison you can also call Jon Heames (http://jonathanheamesflyfishing.com/contact_me.htm). I’ve fished with him here and in Chile where he and his wife run a lodge.
To wade the Madison, stay high – up around Three Dollar Bridge. Better yet go into YSNP and fish the rivers there. They will have lots of water and the Firehole may still be open.
And, you can always drive under and hour to the Henry’s Fork. It will be very wadeable and fishing like crazy. You could still hit Green and Brown Drakes and will certainly have PMD,s. Mike Lawson and Trouthunter are both worldclass fly shops in Last Chance and will always pont you in the right direction.
Be safe and have fun!
Michael PhillippeMemberOK, ya’ll have convinced me. So what’s the difference between the Tundra (Bear Proof) and the Roadie other than price. (I have had a griz in my drift boat in a long time.)
Michael PhillippeMemberCall Uptown Angler in NOLA and ask them.
Michael PhillippeMemberNeal, Looks to me like you just took all the stuff out of your vest and hung it around your neck! 😉
Seriously, beautiful pictures. Wish I could hike up into the mountains alone again. Thanks for the vicarious trip.
Michael PhillippeMemberI have for many years taken my lines off the reels, washed them in regular dishwashing detergent and stored them for the winter on a large diameter spool I made. (A shoe box works really well too). It’s amazing how this prolongs the life of a ($80) fly line!
MIke, think I’ll pass on spraying muriatic acid on my boat!
Michael PhillippeMemberNo one mentioned the Sage VXP. I know the XP was – and still is very popular – but one doesn’t hear much about it’s successor.
Michael PhillippeMemberZach,
Great analogy! Except ‘scraping’ the plaque off a high-gloss finish on a wooden boat is a bit tricky.
Michael
Michael PhillippeMemberInteresting observation, Zach. I never considered that the crud that collects on my boat every time I float the Delaware is also collecting on my fly lines. Given the fact that I can’t get my boat clean with a power washer – it requires serious scrubbing with mild abrasives – it’s no wonder cleaning this stuff off a fly line would be difficult.
Note the side of my boat after a one day float of the West Branch!
Michael PhillippeMemberI think that is a terrible rod! I had one right after they came out and unloaded it in the first season! Are you SURE you want one? Go with a 9 ft – for some reason they fish a lot better.
Michael PhillippeMemberInteresting comments, guys! I was actually looking at the Helios, TCX and Scott S4 – all in 9 ft 5 wt! Guess I’ll have to cast them make up my own mind!
Dave, I usually have two 6 wt rods in the boat. A Winston 9 ft 6 wt LT for wind, and a 9 ft 6 wt streamer rod with a tip. Delaware browns love white Sex Dungeons!
Michael PhillippeMemberWhen I built my 16 ft Guide model, I really didn’t know anything about building a boat or the design options. I wish I could build another one, but this time I would start with the MBB Kingfisher and modify the inside configuration to eliminate the ‘arch’ type rear brace and go with the ‘cobra’. This allows you to move freely around in the boat. Also the Kingfisher has great rod storage along the sides (and a place for that pesky spare oar).
Anyway, building a wooden boat is one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. Everyone should experience it…a couple times!
Michael PhillippeMemberI went Monday with my friend and my son. What a contrast from last week. The Wb was at 860 versus 3500! The Delaware gave son the Montana guide a refresher course in technical dry fly fishing. Apple Caddis, Hendrickson’s, Paraleps, etc. Incredible fishing all day!
Dave, my friend built this skiff from an MBB kit as well. It’s a perfect Delaware boat.
Michael PhillippeMemberPrepare yourself….hot pink waders are on the way.
Michael PhillippeMemberWe headed to the West Branch this weekend to throw streamers in the high water. The West Branch was 3100 cfs at Hale Eddy so we assumed finding Hendrickson’s was as an exercise in futility. Well, we were SO wrong. I’ve been fishing the Delaware system for years and never seen anything like this. All those big fish were pushed up against back, but they were eating dry flies! We found pods of big fish chomping duns all afternoon.
Don’t be put off by the high water – the river is fishing really well.
Michael PhillippeMemberTalk to the guides at Uptown Angler in NOLA (Greg is the one I fish with). They are articulate and knowledgeable. And, I’m sure they can connect you with a biologist and others on your list.
Great idea for a podcast Zach!
Michael PhillippeMemberDave, I love streamer fishing on the WB when it is high! Pushes the big carnivores to the bank. There are lots of Hendrickson’s and BWO’s around right now but the fish aren’t looking up yet. The WB took a bump last night from the rain but I think it may be OK by Sunday.
You are driving a wooden boat – what kind?
Michael PhillippeMemberTry Hertz at SLC airport using the Trout Unlimited discount. We got a great deal on a small SUV for a month last summer. And Hertz is always reliable.
Michael PhillippeMemberA couple new books worth a read:
Opening Days by Richard Chiaponne. Mostly about Alaska.
Brook Trout Forest by Kathy Scott.
