Michael PhillippeMemberGreat interview Zach! It sounds like Mark has great intentions for the company and will be very much involved. His reaching out to Tom Mogan is a good indication of his openminded approach and appreciation for the history of T&T.
Michael PhillippeMemberI worry about absentee owners in small businesses. I have some older T&T rods and they are work of art and a joy to fish with. Hope they can keep it up
Michael PhillippeMemberMagnificent country! Magnificent fish!
Michael PhillippeMemberTry Montana Fly Company in Missoula and or Columbia Falls. They have a nice facility in Thailand and might give you a tour. Sorry, but I don’t have a contact name for you.
Michael PhillippeMemberIf you are looking at a printed copy of the magazine be careful. As noted before, printing technology was not that great (dot gain, color shifts, etc.). Also paper quality will impact how well the image has been preserved. Unfortunately most printers and ad agencies digitized their images in the 90’s to save storage space so original photographs are going to be had to find.
But, scrolling through the images has been fun. I was 14 years old in 1961!
Michael PhillippeMemberIf you are going to float shallow water I would go with a skiff. To build your own look at Montana Boat Builder’s kits. My friend built their skiff for the upper Delaware and we routinely get through 4 inches of water. RO makes a fantastic skiff. It draws little water, but can handle big water as well. I was on the South Fork of the Snake last June with a guide and we only had to high-side once.
Michael PhillippeMemberDr. O, I personally would rather carry 8-11 ounces of water filter than extra water. Katadyn makes some really nice, small model (As do the other guys). Unfortunately, these are 2 micron filters designed for bacteria and protozoa…not a nasty virus. You could just go with purification tablets to cover the virus, but one of things I enjoy is the taste of un-halogenated water from a nice stream.
This all said, I would not pump water from a river near a populated area, e.g your beloved Chattachoohee, or my Delaware. I can remember climbing in the Tetons a few years ago and filing our water bottles straight out of the ground. But then again, we were at ten thousand feet…way out of range of beaver pee.
Michael PhillippeMemberGreat question Neil! I leaned the hard way several years ago on Rock Creek in MT that one can develop hyperthermia while standing in 55 degree water! Especially if the air above it is 100!
Personally I have evolved to one of two systems, based on where I’m fishing and the conditions:
1. Normal conditions; not more than
Michael PhillippeMemberNOLA is fine ‘after the spill.’ You shouldn’t hesitate to go. In fact, I saw no evidence of the oil spill – just a lot of evidence of our incompetency in helping the people recover from Katrina. Nearly 30% of the population of New Orleans has not moved back yet…and maybe never will.
The Uptown Angler is a good shop to talk with. And there are a lot of other guides working there as well. Since my fishing buddy grew up there, we went pretty high end, staying at the historic Waldorf Astoria Roosevelt and eating a LOT of fantastic food. Salt water guide are $$$. We paid $525 for a “multi-day” trip, while the single day rate is $575!
But man, what a way to get rid of cabin fever!!
Michael PhillippeMemberJohn, Yes, it’s a 50 pound black drum that ate a crab pattern.
Michael PhillippeMemberWe were SO fortunate with the weather. Blue skies, warm and no wind!
Neal, you really need to come north and fish the Delaware with me while I can still row my boat!!
Michael PhillippeMemberLooks like a great trip. I was there a couple years ago and it is a wonderful country. I see that you even had an asada! Thanks.
Michael PhillippeMemberZach, You need to start with Poul Jorgensen’s book Salmon Flies. It’s a great book and the classic. I’ve used it for 20 years and the techniques have also helped my trout fly tying immeasurably. It’s about $35 on Alibris.
Michael PhillippeMemberI just received notification yesterday that the Singh Ray Blue/Gold filters are again available:
Michael PhillippeMemberCopper River, Alaska.
Michael PhillippeMemberActually we are fishing with Uptown Angler on 2/25 and 2/26. I hope it’s warm and the fishing is good, but I began eating and drinking my way through New Orleans more than 30 years ago so even if it’s cold, I’ll find something to do. 😉
Michael PhillippeMemberI made a couple of my own years ago. Both are 8 x10 in. One is white on one side and black on the other. The second is a pale green. Glue construction paper (which is naturally non-reflective) to a piece of white cardboard.
Michael PhillippeMemberMark, No I’m still working on it. I believe that the replacement bulb is too large for the transformer…20 w versus 12 w. I’m going to the fly fishing expo in NJ on Friday and thought I might get some info there.
Michael PhillippeMemberJust add another twist, I built a drift boat a few years ago and decided I needed ‘boat boxes.” So, now I have huge Flambeau boxes of flies for the boat that present serious dilemma when I go wade fishing:
– Pick through the boat boxes and build a smaller box for the days wade fishing
– Duplicate all my (hundreds of) flies – one set for floating and one for wading
– Stuff the Flameau boxes in the back of my vest, thereby making me look like the hunchback of Notre Dame. This of course, puts your landing net perpendicular to your body and perfectly positioned to whack you in the head with every sudden movement. And when I get all my flies organized, I need to start on fly lines….
Michael PhillippeMemberWhile my Mac has a predetermined lifespan, thankfully my bamboo rods do not!
