Michael PhillippeMemberI’m guessing that lots of folks here have experience with Yeti coolers. I’m about to replace my aging Coleman and wondered with the Yeti’s were worth the money?

MemberMichael,
I picked up a yeti a few weeks back and I cannot say enough good about it. It is absolutely bombproof and it keeps ice for days. I use mine as a poling platform for my boat as well. It is now one of my favorite pieces of gear.As a side note, the second video in the link below shows a cool trick for preventing fly line snags on a yeti. It works, and it is super easy.

Do yourself a favor and buy one. You won’t regret it.

Michael PhillippeMemberOK, ya’ll have convinced me. So what’s the difference between the Tundra (Bear Proof) and the Roadie other than price. (I have had a griz in my drift boat in a long time.)

MemberIf I am not mistaken, I believe the main difference is just size. The roadie series does have a different handle, but I think the main thing is that they are smaller.
I bought the Tundra 35 which is the smallest in the tundra series, but still plenty large for everything I tend to dump in it.

MemberI have a Yeti and it’s pretty awesome. I can’t say it holds ice any better then one of the 5 day colemans but it is indestructible and makes a great casting platform. They are much heavier then your standard cooler if weight is a consideration. The are also pretty expensive though mine was a gift from a friend.
I’ve also used the Engel. I have one of the 19’s that I used for a camera dry box for 4 years. It’s still 100% watertight after 4 years of use and abuse. It also makes a great cooler that will hold ice for a very long time. Finally retired it this year in favor of a pelican because my equipment outgrew the Engel.

MemberI’d like to fill a $325.00 Yeti and a $75.00 Coleman 5-day cooler* with ice and set them in the hot sun side-by-side, and see how much longer the ice really lasts in the Yeti.

MemberI think where the yeti will shine compared to the colman is after 15 years of heavy use the Yeti will still keep ice for a couple of days. And you will still be safe standing on it…

MemberBrian,
You do have a point. The Yetis are not in any way cheap and the argument can certainly be made that there are other coolers on the market that will fulfill your needs for a fraction of the cost. That being said, I think the quality of the Yeti products are far superior to anything else I have seen and to me that is worth the price. I will typically spend a little more cash if I know I am buying a product that will stand up to hard use and will likely last me as long as I care to use it.
I know there will always be differences of opinion on things like this, but I can say for sure that I would not trade mine.

MemberMy first trip with my Engel was 3 hot and windy days on the Colorado River at the Utah/Colorado border.

MemberSee, my experiences run from the opposite end of the spectrum. Some time late last summer, I went on a trip with one of my Coleman coolers in my Gheenoe. I put ice, food, and cokes in it, floated for a day, drove home, and set it in my garage.
Yesterday, I was looking for something and opened the cooler for some reason. HOOOOOOOIIIIIIIEEEE!!!! Oops, I forgot to take those sandwiches out of the cooler, and I hadn’t used that particular cooler since.

It’s one thing to do that to a $30 Coleman. I don’t think it would be right to do it to a $300 Yeti.

MemberI guess it is just a matter of choice and opinion. I bought a Dodge Ram with a cummins engine and I paid more than I could have bought a standard gasoline truck, but 20 years from now and 1,000,000 miles I will most likely still be going and the standard truck will be long gone .
Who makes the best 5 wt. the 30.00 eagle claw will catch a fish just as good !!!
Buy the Yeti and if you do as it says, you will be happy and it blows coleman out of the water !!!!!!Jun 6, 2011 at 1:43 am #48727brian dunigan
