Mark SidesMemberUmm..One other side note.
I packed my flies in my carry on headed for Chile. When we landed in Santiago the airport authorities/police there were targeting fisherman and specifically fly fisherman.
Any flies tied with natural materials/feathers were confiscated. If you had one fly tied with natural material and the rest of the box was synthetic it was confiscated.Seems there was yet another new govt. rule with the chicken/aviary industry in mind and there were worried about infectious exposure coming from outside sources including fishing flies. >:(
That was three boxes for me, a lot of tying work walking away. As well they snatched up my family sized Nalgen container of Jack Daniels, the reason for confiscating that remained vague at best but take it they did. Some TSA type guy took off with it and 5 minutes later returned with my empty container.
Then I did cry. :'(
Mark SidesMemberCallum, if you haven’t pulled the trigger on the Sims offering look at the FishPond Blue River Chest/Lumbar Pack.
Years ago I was getting frustrated with the limitations of what was available and then found the Fishpond design.
Have traveled the world with it for over 8 years now and am still happy I bought it.http://flydepot.com/flyfishing/fishpond-blue-river-chest-lumbar-pack/pid–179/
Mark SidesMemberThanks much for the invite Matt, as I mentioned via email, we have a whole bunch of new ducks in the area so I am headed out to harass Donald and Daffy this aftn. ;D
At some point soon I really would like to catch up with you guys, thanks again.Be well………..

Mark SidesMemberA great place to be this time of year….
Mark SidesMemberHow to cast to, strip strike and soundly hook a dock, which is now my pals new nickname. 😉
Mark SidesMemberOne of the main sources of cover the Muskies use is the docks. It makes a helluv’a noise when an errant cast lets the steel headed fly clang off of a metal upright…but the “dock chucking” turned out to be productive in terms of follows and a couple of short term hook-ups.
Mark SidesMemberOn my last bonefish trip there was an 8 wt. “one” that someone in our group had just purchased.
A couple of us found it in the rod rack at days end and after more than a few beers we started playing around with it and indeed it has a truly light feel to it and a really easy load and launch attitude about it.
We got a couple of the guides down to the beach to give it a workout and see what they thought and those guys gave it a very positive review, not something they offer too often.Would I buy it?
Not right now, I still really like my T@T, but if I were to upgrade I would certainly give it hard look, if you are willing to drop that kind of cash on a “fishing pole” as my wife calls it.Indeed two of my close fishing buddies split a days fishing with it for a try out. Upon returning home they both changed over from a T@T and an RPLXi, both 8wts., to the newer Sage One offering.
I would never consider offering any definitive commentary without first having inspected, cast and fished this fly rod first hand. ::)
Mark SidesMemberMatt, any insect/health issues during your trip to Tsimane I have read about in other publications?
Well done on the photo work…..
Mark SidesMemberWell done sir. A grand slam on the honeymoon, way to score! ;D
Mark SidesMemberBlack bead head WB.
Mark SidesMemberI have to believe those would trigger a Striper hit in the N.E. and Chesapeake bay area…..
Zach, do you have a link as to how those are made?
Mark SidesMemberOn my last trip out they had these on all the boats.
These are the latest version offered with more spacing between the “nubs”.
We had constant wind in excess of 20mph and these mats made all the difference between having your stripped line laying in the bottom or getting blown off the deck.We didn’t encounter any problems with them being too slick and sliding around on the deck…they held in place nicely.
The cost is prohibitive unless you spend a lot of time on the water but they function really well, I had zero line snags at times when it was getting peeled off in a hurry.
Mark SidesMemberYou didn’t have any fun did you?
Mark SidesMemberAnother consideration for those who kayak in the ocean….. here is a comment from the phototographer on the very famous image he captured ……..
The photograph is real, no photoshop, no digital manipulation, no nothing, in fact it was shot on slide film Fuji Provia 100 using a Nikon F5 Camera and 17-35 mm lens. For those conspiracy fans who still doubt its authenticity please read how I took the photograph.
Mark SidesMemberIn my section of the midwest we finally broke 10 days of 102 degrees or hotter. Yesterday it was 118 degrees in the STL Cardinals dugout and 112 on the field…I gave my tickets to my son.
Crops, corn and beans and food plots don’t have much time left…in desperate need to water. Streams and ponds are way too low with water temps too high.
Cold front came in last night, today’s high only in the low 90’s, still, no significant rain due for another week.
Mark SidesMemberI’m still in my 02′ Explorer Sport Trac, 115,000, lousy gas mileage and just runs and runs, as well as being paid for.
Has been completely reliable with zero issues other than standard maintenance. I did install new bearing hubs, rotors and brakes at 100,000, but that’s just me being anal about taking care of my “stuff”.She who must be obeyed has a 2009 Honda CRV, great car.
My other sled is a 1960 Austin Healy 3000 that I did a ground up restoration on many years ago. Â A true throw back of a classic British sports car and an absolute blast to drive although the police in my area have scolded me a few times.
My black lab Crusher will ride shotgun and with my fishing gear in the back seat we go off in search of a quality spot to wet a line. Great way to spend a fall aftn. before archery season opens.
Mark SidesMemberMerv is indeed still there…I have fished with him many times over the years and consider him a friend.
I make him nuts constantly asking about about fish behavior and weather influence and casting and his quiet life style and life in Mcleans Town and he always is just as even keel and calm as can be always offering a thoughtful answer. Here is a shot of Merv with one of my long time fishing companions Peter and his son……..
Mark SidesMemberI took hundreds of pics on this trip and these are just a few from the beginning of my edit list.
I will end up making a photo book for my fishing partners as Xmas gifts……….hopefully it makes them smile. 😉
Mark SidesMemberA guide we fished with, Meeko Glinton, has a four year old son who can cast an entire fly line with his kids/starter stick.
Take a look at Joseph Pinder in these next three shots. He is using only the the tip section of my T&T 8 wt., and he is casting the entire fly line. Left hand or right, makes no difference. He can stand on the bow of the boat at 40 mph and cast the full length of my fly line using my same T&T 8 wt. Â I have fished with a lot of these guys since they first started and with some of their dads as well.
IMHO there is no one in the world who excels at fly casting the way these Bahamian guides do.
